Trupti Desai defies dress code to take darshan at Mahalaxmi temple

Kolhapur, Apr 14 (PTI): In a high drama, Bhoomata Ranragini Brigade leader Trupti Desai on Wednesday night took darshan of goddess Mahalaxmi by entering into sanctum sanctorum of the temple by defying the "dress code" prescribed by police and priests, amid a minor scuffle inside the famous shrine.

Notwithstanding the "advice" given by the police to wear sari inside 'girbh griha' of the temple, the woman activist entered the inner sanctum in salwar kameez though some priests and devotees tried to block her way.

Earlier in the day, Desai and other activists were taken into preventive custody by police when they tried to proceed towards the temple in a procession allegedly in violation of prohibitory orders.

Desai headed towards temple in night after she was detained by police during day time.

She and other activists had organised the 'Vijay' rally in afternoon to mark "victory" for the cause of women who were recently allowed to enter the inner sanctum of the temple in a major departure from the long-standing tradition.

Desai and her associates were stopped in Tararani Chowk by police where they had gathered to organise the procession.

The atmosphere around the temple was tense and shops downed shutters as activists of Shiv Sena and other organisations gathered in the area after Desai insisted to take darshan of the deity, clad in salwar kameez instead of sari, the formal dress code suggested by police and priests.

Deputy SP Bharatkumar Rane said police tried to convince Desai against going in procession but she did not budge.

She was taken into preventive custody for maintaining law and order, he said.

All these publicity stunts will be well tolerated in Hindu religion because it is a soft religion. I wonder why Miss Desai has not led women a brigade into mosques. I guess she knows the consequences very well.

I strongly believe salvar kameez as more decent compared to Sari. Sari exposes the tummy part and above in more detail and also neck portion is exposed depending on the blouse!. So why people insisting a not so decent dress!?. Secondly men enter sanctum sanctorium without shirt and mostly kachhes/lungi! Does God differentiate between sexes!?. Finally we all came naked and will go naked to God! Why these humans behave like middlemen!???

    @John FYI:
Temples are located strategically at a place where the positive energy is abundantly available from the magnetic and electric wave distributions of north/south pole thrust. The main idol is placed in the core center of the temple, known as “Garbhagriha” or Moolasthanam. In fact, the temple structure is built after the idol has been placed. This Moolasthanam is where earth’s magnetic waves are found to be maximum. We know that there are some copper plates, inscribed with Vedic scripts, buried beneath the Main Idol. What are they really? No, they are not God’s / priests’ flash cards when they forget the shlokas. The copper plate absorbs earth’s magnetic waves and radiates it to the surroundings. Thus a person regularly visiting a temple and walking clockwise around the Main Idol receives the beamed magnetic waves and his body absorbs it. This is a very slow process and a regular visit will let him absorb more of this positive energy. Scientifically, it is the positive energy that we all require to have a healthy life

    Logical Indian,

Your post made an interesting reading. Once, me and my spouse met a person while we were on our walk. The walk was around a park, we walked around its fence, at the outer circle. We were moving in an clock-wise motion while a man who also was walking, but in anti-clock-wise motion, politely greeted us and we reciprocated. Next, he said that our motion is wrong, we should be moving in opposite motion. The small-talk ended soon, we did not understand what he was trying to explain and we still continue to walk in the same motion.

I wonder if what you have written here has a connection to what he said. However, what did you say about its application to women or why not to question you about it ? I wish to know. I wish to know the logicality of it whether different energy terms apply to different gender.

Dear Logical, it's a fashion these days to put/explain every Indian thing as scientific!. Logically science is something that everyone should be able to replicate anywhere!. For example, if you touch a live wire, you will get electric shock! Does anyone is required to study electrical science to experience! ?. Secondly my personal observation is that people regularly going to places of worship tend to have shorter lives compared to the ones at home! ( women! ).

Stressing on sari alone is not right. Any neat dress, covered appropriately is fine enough, I feel.

Having said that how do handle such publicity hungry bunch of ladies doing their funny act. If their intension is darshan and devotion, they will not do such drama… in fact devotion is the last thing in their agenda.. and they know they can gain publicity only by attacking hindu customs as they don’t have the guts to question others. Like in the west, they may come in bikini tomorrow and storm into the temple. May goddess Mahalaxmi bless them and give them some sense.

I completely agree with Mr. Rajesh(Udupi). I dont know why only Sari is considered decent, salwar is good as well. Every religious place of worship asks for its people to wear a decent outfit in holy places.

having said that the ones who are hell bent at breaking the rules are the ones who actually dont have any value to the belief and are thirsty for publicity. This trupti looks like a publicity hungry female who will do anything to be on print media.

Dress code in temples is not for suppressing anyone's rights.

In temples to take blessings, you need to kneel down, bow your body forward and touch the sacred ground on your forehead.
With dhothi or saree, it will be comfortable and it will not cause any embarrassment to the people kneeling down behind you.

I wonder what will be the situation now onwards!!
I still feel women should not enter temples with minis.

You make a woman wear saree and make her kneel down prostrate. Imagine the scene for people who are standing behind her. At the same time, let a salwar/khameez wearing woman do that posture, see the difference ! If somebody wonders why especially saree, this is the answer !

Saree, is wrapped around 4 or 5 times i think around the body, which vanishes all depressions and curves which otherwise usually distract men like me, even in a place of worship.
Now that women's right is getting stronger, instead of opposing, i think, we (men like me) should go for meditation courses to strengthen our minds. And also pray Almighty to strengthen our minds so that it will not get distracted by these worldly curves and depressions!!

    Shankar,

Now, you are not teaching me the way a saree is wrapped around - are you ? Saree comes around the midriff just twice, not 4-5 times. Third over-lapping is lifted up as a pallu and in the attempt the midriff is left bare.

If you keep imagining about women and their dress-style with such an agape, future Trupti Desais will wear a cloak head to toe, especially when going to a temple !

Well, whose guidance do you intend to take for meditation ? Not Baba Ramdev - surely ? He has a penchant for Salwal/Khameez... Beware !

Mango or apple they don't differentiate over entering any body. They give equal nutrients to all, without discriminating.

Similarly, whether Turupti Desai is a temple goer or a Church goer should not be anybody's concern - when all women join her in her fight, do not divide women as per their faith !

Tomorrow if any Muslim/Christian women face some problems, many Trupti Desais will join in to give you dominator a fitting reply !
