Kundapur, Apr 18: A wild buffalo which jumped from one side of the road to the other crossed the path of a motor bike rider in the bargain, and accounted for his life. The incident occurred on the night of Saturday April 16 at Mastikatte near Kollur, and the man who died in this incident was Bhaskar Ganiga (55) from Kollur.

Bhaskar Ganiga is survived by wife, a son, and two daughters. His house was bedecked for the upcoming marriage of his younger daughter. A large number of people, who had become fans of Bhaskar because of altruist nature and his help to the needy, assembled at his house after coming to know about his tragic end.

Ganiga, a noted social worker, who happens to be the brother of Kollur Ramesh Ganiga, president of Byndoor block Congress committee, was busy distributing invitations for the marriage of his daughter scheduled to be held on April 27. When he was returning home at night after visiting some homes to invite families for the marriage function, a wild buffalo which suddenly jumped from the forest located on one side, fell on his motor bike that was passing by the point then. Ganiga fell onto he road, and as the wild buffalo walked over his body, his stomach, waist, and face suffered severe injuries.

Seriously injured Ganiga was taken to a private hospital in the town for treatment and then to Manipal hospital. He did not respond to treatments, and his end came at around 4 am on Sunday, his family sources said. A case about his death was registered in Kollur police station.

Zilla panchayat member, Shankar Poojary, state BJP Raita Morcha vice president, Deepak Shetty, Congress leaders, Raju Poojary, P L Jose etc paid their last respects to the departed.

Many have urged the forest department officials to regulate the menace of wild buffaloes in Kollur sanctuary belt located near residential areas. They said buffaloes have turned into a potent threat to residents, and have inflicted serious injuries to a number of vehicle riders in villages like Kollur, Jadkal, Mudoor, Hallihole, Kamalashile, Ajri, Kodladi, Amasebail, Hosangady, Madamakki etc where even crops and other agricultural produce have suffered heavy damages.
