Suu Kyi to clarify Myanmar's new foreign policy

Nay Pyi Taw, April 21 (IANS): Aung San Suu Kyi, now Myanmar's new foreign minister, will clarify the new orientation of the government's foreign policy to diplomats here on Friday, authorities said on Thursday.

Invitation has been sent out to 93 embassies, including a UN agency, Xinhua news agency reported.

Suu Kyi's official meeting with foreign diplomats as the foreign minister will be the first after the new government of ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) took office on April 1.

According to the deputy director-general of the political department of the Foreign Ministry, U Ko Ko Shein, Myanmar's foreign policy is oriented toward protection of national interests, security, economic development, justice, stability and environmental sustainability.

There has been a dramatic shift of emphasis in Myanmar's foreign policy from "bilateral relations" to "regional integration" and "multilaterialism".
