Mangaluru, Apr 29: The Deputy Commissioner has requested for cooperation from citizens to implement plastic ban in the district. In a public circular released to the media he stated, that plastic carry bags and other plastic items in everyday use damage the environment and pose a risk to health.

As per the Indian Constitution Column 48A, 'All the state government have the responsibility to protect the environment.' The government has come to know that widespread use of plastic carry bag, plastic hand bills, plastic buntings, flex, flags, plastic plates, plastic tumblers, plastic spoon, cling film, plastic sheet and items manufactured using
thermocol spoil the environment and pose risk for human and animal health.

Plastic waste hinders free flow of waste water in drainages and sewers causing pollution of water. The bags that go under the ground, do not dissolve in mud, and obstruct rain water by absorbing from the ground. Therefore the state government has made use of Environment protection act 1986 section 5 and banned the use of plastic items vide circular dated March 11.

The manufacture, transport and sale of plastic items are banned. If those are continued, the government officials will raid such establishments and the plastic items will be seized. Plastic buntings, flex, plastic flags on public places will be removed. Such actions are already in progress and will be continued. The district administration has requested people to use items made of cloth, rexine or paper instead.
