Mangalore, Oct 17:  City branch of Indian Society of Anesthesiologists observed ‘World Anaesthesia Day’ on Tuesday October 16 in IMA Hall to commemorate the first public demonstration of painless surgery using ‘ether’ to make patient unconscious on this day in the year 1846, in Massachusetts General Hospital Boston, USA. This was one of the path-breaking moment of science in general and medicine in particular.

Prof Dr Suresh Kamath, CMO, Trust Hospital, Nitte, was chief guest of the programme.  Addressing the gathering he said that specialty of Anaesthesia has come a long to serve the mankind making possible all kinds of prolonged and complicated surgical procedures, while reducing mortality owing to surgery and anaesthesia from almost 100% to less than 0.1% at present. He recalled senior anesthesiologists of the city who rendered selfless service in government Wenlock Hospital for long years. He gave call to the younger anesthesiologists to come forward to recognize themselves in the society with their good work and bring repute to their speciality.

Dr Sukumar Shetty, senior consultant Anaesthesiologist of the city was felicitated. Prize distribution was held to the winners of post-graduate quiz programme conducted as a part of the celebrations. Dr Padmanabha S, president ISA, Mangalore, presided over the function and Dr Sripada G Mehandale, secretary proposed vote of thanks.
