Mumbai, Apr 29 (Mid-day): Malwani cops rule out foul play, claim hereditary depression as the reason for the 22-year-old's drastic step
An aspiring 22-year-old fashion designer ended her life at her rented apartment in Malwani on Wednesday evening. Based on the circumstantial evidence, which includes a suicide note, cops have ruled out foul play in Heena Jilani's death.
An officer from Malwani police station said Heena hailed from Kolkata and was pursuing a course in fashion designing at Pearl Academy in Andheri, for which she had shifted to Mumbai a year ago. He said the investigation also revealed that she was suffering from depression, which is hereditary. Several of her family members, including her father, are undergoing treatment for depression.
The officer added that Heena had shifted into a rented apartment in Vishwashanti cooperative housing society at Malwani gate no 8 just 20 days ago. Since a few of their relatives reside in Malwani, the Jilanis thought it would be better if their daughter lived nearby. Before shifting to Malwani, Heena resided at a women's hostel and later moved into a rented apartment with four of her friends in Andheri.
The suicide
It was Heena's landlord who sensed that something was amiss when he went to tell her to fill water. When she failed to open the door despite repeated knocks, he immediately informed her relatives. The cousins who reached her apartment around 8.30 pm decided to break open a window after Heena failed to answer their calls despite repeated attempts. To their horror, they found Heena's body hanging from the ceiling fan after they broke open the living room window. They immediately informed the police.
Upon searching her room, cops found a suicide note that read: 'Sorry Mumma. Abba I love you. Pls forgive me. No one is responsible for my death'.
Cops ruled out foul play following initial inquiry and sent the body to Shatabdi hospital for a post-mortem exam. An accidental death report has been filed in this case.
