PM Modi made no deal with Italy on AgustaWestland case, says Govt

New Delhi, Apr 30 (Agencies): Rebutting allegations that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had struck a deal with Italy on the multi-million dollar AgustaWestland chopper deal, the government on Friday issued a statement saying the central issue was corruption and any other effort to divert from it was "misleading".

"Those who cannot see Prime Minister succeed even hint at him cutting a deal. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not cut any deal of any sort," said the government statement.

The statement said that some had even sought to link one of the accused in the case with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Principal Secretary to PM Nripendra Mishra. "This is a totally baseless assertion, devoid of reason and logic, and indicative of malicious intent. In reality, there is no such connection," it said.

It added that "it is indeed tragic that a small section of the Indian polity has attempted, 'unsuccessfully', to divert and defuse the public discourse on this matter".

"In the matter pertaining to acquisition of AgustaWestland helicopters, the undisputed central issue that stands out is corruption, especially bribery... Any other line of assumption, approach and effort, as is being attempted in some quarters, is misleading, tries to hide the wrong-doers and is driven by instincts of self-preservation," it said.

The deal for the helicopters, worth 3,600 crores and for the use of VVIPs, went off track in 2013 when Italy arrested the head of Finmeccanica, which owns AgustaWestland, for paying bribes to secure the deal. He was convicted earlier this month.

Italy and India have separately investigated 30 million Euros as kickbacks for the AgustaWestland deal. While Italy has looked at who offered the bribes, the Indian government said this week "it is the identity of the bribe-takers that must be established". Notes and letters exchanged between Finmeccanica executives and middlemen named several leaders of the Congress, which was then in power. These documents were deliberated upon by the Italian court, and attached to its order, which grants them legitimacy, the ruling BJP says.

These allegations were not made by Congress but by British arms agent Christian Michel who is sought by Indian authorities. He has made these submissions at the International Tribunal of the Law of the Seas in Hamburg and the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague where Italy and India are battling legally over murder charges against the marines. The offer seemed to have been made when Modi has a flying meeting with Italian OM during the UN Conference in NY in September 2015. Given PM's animosity with the Gandhis, one cannot simply neglect what Christian Michel has stated. Modi criticized UPA government and had targeted Sonia Gandhi heavily in the mariners' case. But even after 2 years months of NDA government, verdict is not in the vicinity and in fact India has failed to bring back one of the accused who had left India in December 2014 for treatment. Before the election both Modi and BJP had been shouting from roof top that if given power, they would send Sonia and Rahul Gandhi along with Vadra to jail within 2 months (Uma Bharati had stated just 10 days). Forget about jail, even 2 years into power, they have failed to register even one FIR against Gandhis. The MP govt has given Vadra clean chit in land deals while in Haryana the investigation so far has suggested that Vadra's deals were clean. So Modi and BJP are in urgent need to 'FIX' Gandhis in some or ther other case and they would go to any length to do that. After all Modi is no Statesman of Vajapayee or MMS caliber. He is a petty street fighter who thrives on hatred and animosity and indulges in cheap tricks and language to score political points. That is why he only addresses rallies where there is listening crowd but never addresses a press conference where there are journos waiting with uneasy questions. If BJP can accept the submissions of David Headley in the Court, why can't we take the submissions of Christian Michel, which too have been made in the court?

It is very unfortunate, corruption is in the DNA of Indians. Be it congress or BJP or any other party, and the babudom has the multiples of corruption. The NDA-1 initiated the deal, UPA-1 and 2 continued the process and found underhand kickback and so cancelled the deal initiated enquiry, imposed penalty on the supplier also got some money back to the country. But found kick back but never found out the culprit. Then the NDA 2 didnot find anything for last 2 years until the Italian court found something, Now the blame game. Can any party or the defence org claim clean. Nothing can be done . Corruption runs in our DNA. All the accused will come out clean and all the politicians will celebrate. Bharat matha ki jai. All forgotten and forgiven.

BJP bellowed at its high tone to tell Indians that Congress leaders have money hoarded in Swiss banks which will be brought back within 100 days from its coming to power. They promised that the money belongs to the people of India which, if distributed, will be 15 lakh for each person. When the names of Swiss Bank Account holders came out, nobody had any idea who were they, leave alone them belonging to any party ! Anticipating Achche-din, Indians voted for BJP and in return are burning in high taxes, inflated petrol prices, toor dal for Rs. 200/- the list is endless !

Then came Panama leak. Again there were expectations to see Congress leaders' name in the list. Once again disappointed citizens are looking up to BJP to jail Sonia Gandhi in AugustaWestland case. The lady is shouting at the top of her voice 'I have done no wrong' Why aren't you guys bringing some proof and jail her ? Please ??

By giving little hope after little, you are killing Indians who supported Congress all through their life. For once Bhartaya Jhoot Party, please prove yourself true.. Please !

Please do not buy toor dal in USA, it will cost you 200rs, in India its currently at 120 to 130rs..

Italian courts are not run by BJP, so I guess your whole debate is false..

Can you please show me the video where 15 lakhs promised, since I have searching it from last 2.5 years, I am not getting that video, there is 1 Video where modi is stating that the tune of black money is so much that we can give 15 lakhs to every citizen of this country, if you are referring this video out of context then you are wrong again..

    Giving themselves Clean Chit!
Wonder when a criminal, judges his own case & s he has no part in the crime.
Then WHY within 40 days of Black listing a company that took 2 years of process was removed from the list?
Certainly a deal or kickbacks are received to whitewash a crime seems more plausible in this case.
Any government that asks opposition to give it names with all the investigating agencies under it is a biggest joke or shows how incapable this government is, its better it handover the power to some other party who are more capable than themselves to unearth the truth with impartiality instead of selective leaks & fake claims in media only.
