EC rejects BJP complaint against Trinamool MP

Kolkata, May 5 (IANS): The Election Commission on Thursday rejected, as "unsubstantial", the Bharatiya Janata Party's complaints against a Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member and West Bengal assembly poll candidate of trying to influence the final phase using police.

"As per the district magistrate's report, the complaint was found to be unsubstantial," said a poll panel official.

In separate deputations to the EC, the Communist Party of India-Marxist and the BJP had alleged that Trinamool Lok Sabha member Suvendu Adhikari held a secret meeting in the intervening night of May 1-2 with officers-in-charge (OCs) of several police stations in East Midnapore district with a motive to disrupt the polling process on May 5.

The poll panel said it found no substance in the complaint.

Following the poll panel negating the veracity of the complaint, the BJP had urged the EC to check the tower locations of the mobiles of Adhikari and the OCs, which was rejected by the poll panel on Thursday.
