Shivamogga, May 6: After reports said that animals were sacrificed at the Somayaaga organized at Mattur near here recently, it is gathered that a team of officials led by deputy tahsildar, Pradeep, which undertook investigation, submitted preliminary report to the chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat here, confirming that no animal sacrifice was performed at the Yaaga.

There were reports that for the 'Somayaaga' fire sacrifice held with the stated purpose of seeking the boon of general welfare from the gods, a sum of Rs 50 lac was spent, animals were sacrificed, and 'Somarasa' intoxicating drink was consumed. Deputy commissioner (DC) of the district, V P Ikkeri, had asked deputy tahsildar, Pradeep, to investigate the contents of these reports and find out whether animals were scarified at the Yaaga held from April 22 to 27.

On Thursday, a team led by deputy tahsildar, Pradeep, went to Mattur and examined the site of the Yaaga. By evening, they prepared a preliminary report and handed it over to the ZP chief executive officer, Rakesh Kumar, confirming that no animal sacrifice had occurred there. In all likelihood, Rakesh will submit this report to the DC on Friday.

District in-charge minister, Kimmane Ratnakar, reacting to the issue, said he does not have any information about animal sacrifice having happened during Somayaaga. He said he can comment about it only after getting report from the officials.
