Ola driver detained for molesting 23-year-old Belgian woman in Delhi

New Delhi, May 8 (IANS) : The Delhi Police have detained an Ola cab driver for allegedly molesting a 23-year-old Belgian woman on Saturday evening.

A case regarding the incident was registered at the CR Park police station in South Delhi after the woman approached police and filed a complaint against the driver a few hours after the incident.

“We have detained the driver, Raj Singh, a resident of Alwar in Rajastan after the complaint,” deputy commissioner of Police, Mandeep Singh Randhawa told IANS.

According to the police, the woman was on her way to CR Park from Gurgaon when the driver took a wrong route. “The woman was monitoring her way on her phone’s GPS. She asked the driver to take the right route but the driver said he was taking a short cut,” a senior police officer said.

The woman then reportedly called her friend and asked him to speak to the driver. The driver told the woman’s friend that he would drop her safely.
The woman alleged that five minutes later the driver asked her to come and sit in the front seat as his GPS was not working. “He had switched off the GPS. When the woman sat in the front, the driver snatched her phone, pinned her down and kissed her. She alleged that the driver deleted the call records. She then raised an alarm,” the officer said.

Following this, the driver allegedly threatened her of dire consequences. He told her he would kill her if she complained to the police. The driver then left her in Govindpuri. The woman immediately called her friend and narrated the episode to him. “The woman reached her friend’s home and then informed the police. Our team went to the house and recorded her statement. A statement will also be recorded before the magistrate and a case will be registered,” a police officer said.

A spokesperson for Ola said, “The said driver has been terminated from the platform with immediate effect. We will share all the required information with the authorities to help resolve this for the customer. We have zero tolerance to such behaviour.”

The number of molestation/rape incidents involving Ola and Uber cab drivers is increasing day by day.

It is very much evident that proper background verification (regarding their character, police verification, whether their name/s are appearing on the rowdy sheeter/s list, criminal background, etc.) of the cab drivers is not being carried out, before they are enrolled on the respective Cab Cos. platform.

Also, as and when negligence on the part of Cab Cos. is found in the matter of strict observance of the set down guidelines, stringent punishment is to be meted out to the persons responsible for the same and also on the Cab Cos.

Only then can we expect things to improve and nobody would dare to do any such mischief, in future.

There should be better safety system for ladies who travel alone in cabs. There should be a emergency number on the back of the driver seat and the lonely lady passenger should give a miss call or send a message giving cab number, location and destination as soon as lady passenger takes a cab. It should be easy for police to locate the cab using GPS system. If there is a second miss call or a call means emergency , police can reach out for help of the lady passenger. Fear is the key to minimize all the crimes.

"We have zero tolerance to such behavior"

What is the use of zero tolerance after an incident, after damage is done. This statement is only meant for damage control.

Real "zero tolerance" of an organization is recognizable and appreciated only when it is proactive not reactive.

With the continuance in rise of molestation incidents by Ola drivers a thorough personality check/review by Ola of all its drivers is long overdue.

Ola should not just sit there making hay while the sun shines. Safety of it's customers should be Ola's highest concern.
