Mangaluru, May 9: In view of acute water shortage, MLC Ivan D'souza on Monday May 9 conducted a press meet and briefed about contingency plans of MCC.

Speaking to media persons at MCC office, Ivan said, “There has been severe water shortage in the district. The situation has worsened day by day. Thus the city corporation has made arrangements to supply the water through water tankers and syntax.”

“I have urged builders and various organizations to help people by supplying water in their transport vehicles. I have also asked the deputy commissioner to request various organizations in this regard and provide them with necessary permissions.”

“About 50 tankers are supplying water in city which is not enough. I urge people to come forward and help the needy. This is an alarming signal that we should take a call and seriously think about preserving water. In this direction, I have formed a committee comprising of experts like Dayanand Kotian, Dr Vivek Rai and S N Madyastha to find permanent solutions so that this problem will not arise in future.”

“A seminar will be conducted after considering all the suggestions and a report will be submitted to government so that proper steps can be taken to check such problems in future.”

“Chief Minister has requested centre for Rs 12270 crores funds to handle drought situation in state. Twenty seven districts in the state are announced as drought-hit other than Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu.”

“We will request government to consider Dakshina Kannada also as drought-hit district since there is acute shortage of water. I request the Prime Minister to consider the request and sanction the amount on humanitarian grounds.”

“After Rajastan, Karnataka is the second state severely hit by drought in the nation. I urge the MPs of the state to request prime minister to consider the request. There is about 4.7 feet water in Thumbay dam which is enough only for three time.”
