New Delhi, May 11 (IANS): After the legislative debacle in Uttarakhand, the BJP on Wednesday tried to justify the Centre's March 27 decision to clamp Presidential Rule in the state.

"The Congress may have proved its majority in the present circumstances, but the central government's decision to proclaim President's Rule was correct, as the finance bill brought in by the Congress government fell in the house on March 18,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Anil Baluni told IANS. 

Referring to two sting operations that came to light during the last fortnight, Baluni accused the Congress of indulging in horse-trading. 

Uttarakhand BJP unit chief Ajay Bhatt also questioned Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal's decision to disqualify nine rebel MLAs.

"The Speaker has misused the power conferred on him by law. Had he allowed a floor test on March 18, the result would have been different,” Bhatt told IANS from Dehradun. 

“The Congress was not in majority earlier, nor is it now. It has only 27 seats and the government would be on crutches. As opposition, we will keep highlighting their wrong policies and in the next elections the public would give a clear verdict,” Bhatt added.

The government on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that ousted Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat commanded the legislative majority and his government would be restored.

General elections to the state assembly are due in the middle of next year.
