5.8 quake jolts Taiwan


Taipei, May 12 (IANS): An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Taiwan on Thursday.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 11.17 a.m., was at sea, 19.7 km southeast of Yilan county, at a depth of 17.5 km, according to the Central Weather Bureau.

The highest intensity was detected in the county at six, followed by four in Yilan city, New Taipei's Wufengshan, Hualien's Heping, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu County's Judong Township, Taiwan News reported citing the bureau.

Taipei registered an intensity of three, which was also measured in Hsinchu City and Miaoli.

However, there were no reports of damages or casualties.
