Maxwell may leave PSG for not getting French passport

Paris, May 12 (IANS): Paris Saint-Germain Brazilian defender Maxwell may leave the French football club at the end of this season for not receiving a French passport as he had hoped.

Media reports on Wednesday said the PSG player had filed for a French passport that has been denied by the interior ministry, reports Efe.

Therefore, the player, whose contract ends June 30, may not be in the club, although he and the coaching staff want to extend his contract for an additional season.

The reason is that Maxwell occupies one of the four non-European Union positions in PSG with compatriots Lucas, Thiago Silva and David Luiz.

The French club expects this summer to make a great signing and it may be with a player from outside the European Union, so there would be no place for Maxwell. FC Barcelona's Neymar was rumored to be the target.

After three seasons at Barcelona, Maxwell arrived to PSG in January 2012, after he played for Inter Milan (2006-2009) and Ajax Amsterdam (2001-2006).
