Agartala, May 14 (IANS): Journalists' associations in the northeastern region on Saturday condemned the killing of a media person each in Bihar and Jharkhand.

The Guwahati-based Journalists' Forum Assam (JFA) expressed shock over the murders of Rajdeo Ranjan, a bureau chief of a Hindi newspaper, in Siwan district of Bihar, and Indradeo Yadav, a TV journalist, in Chatra district of Jharkhand. 

"We demand stringent actions against the culprits who dared to target media persons. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das must wake up to nab the killers at the earliest," said a JFA statement, citing President Rupam Barua and Secretary Nava Thakuria.

Tripura Working Journalists Association (TWJA) and Tripura Journalists Union (TJU) also urged the authorities in Bihar and Jharkhand to take stringent action against the killers.

"Media fraternity across the country must raise united voice against the killings," said a TWJA statement, quoting President Dibakar Debnath.

A special law is needed to protect working journalists across the country, said a TJU statement, citing Secretary Pranab Sarkar.

Rajdeo Ranjan, the Siwan bureau chief of the Hindi newspaper Hindustan, which is part of the HT Media, was shot dead at a busy market near Station Road in the district on Friday night.

Indradeo Yadav, a correspondent for a local television channel in Jharkhand's Chatra district, was shot dead on Thursday night.
