Udupi: Pre-monsoon showers damage many houses in district

Udupi, May 16: Pre-monsoon showers brought respite from heat but also damaged many houses, electricity poles and other things in district on Tuesday May 17.

The heavy rain obstructed traffic at many places and commuters were stuck on roads because of heavy wind and lightning.

A house belonging to Koragajja from Herady was partially damaged and roof was broken because of the strong wind and rain. Another house belonging to Somappa was also damaged due to rain. He incurred a loss of Rs 25,000 due to this.

According to the Tehsildar as many as 18 houses were partially damaged and four houses were completely destroyed due to rain. It was also reported that series of electricity poles were fallen on ground near MGM College, Udupi.

Gerald Lewis from Salikeri was reportedly injured when a coconut tree fell on his house. He is admitted in a private hospital.

According to district disaster management department, Rs 6 lac worth of properties was damaged in the wind and rain. Tehsildar informed that he will pay a visit to all the damaged houses and decide to compensate family if necessary.

The disaster management department has sanctioned a proposal of Rs 25 lac to district commissioner as relief fund.
