Indian equities open flat amid vote counting

Mumbai, May 19 (IANS): Indian equity market indices opened flat on Thursday as counting for the assembly polls was on in five states.

The sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE, which had closed at 25,704.61 points on Wednesday, opened at 25,713.84 points, some minutes after it was trading at 25,615.75 points with a loss of 88.86 points, or 0.35 percent.

At the National Stock Exchange, the 51-scrip Nifty opened at 7,852.15 points against the earlier close at 7,875.50 points. This index, some minutes later, was ruling at 7,839.15 with a loss of 31 points, or 0.39 percent.

On Wednesday, due to profit booking and weak global cues, the Sensex had fallen 69 points, or 0.27 percent, while the wider 51-scrip Nifty ended lower by 20.60 points, or 0.26 percent.

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday released minutes of its last meeting saying it was more open to raise rates than many had thought.

Currently the uncertainty in the political domain increased volatility in the stock market.
