Mangaluru, May 20: Two young men, who were busy picking seashells in Falguni river, also known as Gurpur river, near Adyapady dam drowned on Thursday May 19 evening.
The unfortunate youngsters have been identified as brothers, Sandeep (28) and Sandesh (26), residents of Shivanagara in Mooushedde.
The bodies were recovered on Friday morning May 20.
At about 4.30 pm on Thursday, three men had approached the dam, after which two among them removed their clothes, placed them on the bank of the river, and entered the water where they began to pick seashells. The other youth continued to wait atop the dam. Sandeep and Pradeep, who moved ahead, suddenly drowned and went missing. The youth who was waiting outside grew panicky as both of them failed to turn up after a long time. The policemen were also informed about the incident thereafter.
Kavoor police, who went to the spot, later called the Bajpe police. Firemen from two tenders attached to Kadri fire station searched for the missing men in water but failed to make anhy progress till late night.
The bodies were found on Friday morning.
At many places in rivers and rivulets, large pits created due to sand mining exist. They are not visible to naked eye. Some of these pits also have strong water currents. It is believed that the missing youths would have got caught in strong current and drowned.
