State CET rankings to prevail if ordinance get Presidential nod

Bengaluru, May 21: The air of uncertainty prevailing in the state over admissions into medical and dental courses will be cleared this time if the ordinance prepared by the union government to bypass Supreme Court judgement on National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) gets approval of the President. This ordinance provides for common entrance tests (CET) to be conducted by respective states. Once the ordinance is signed, the state government's quota of seats in the above categories will be distributed as per the state CET rankings.

In tune with the ordinance, even the government quota of seats in private colleges will be distributed as per CET rankings. However, the seats which were hitherto distributed through Comed-K UGET will be distributed as per NEET rankings. This information was given by officials in the department of medical education as per the feedback they have received at present from the union government.

Several states including Karnataka and Tamil Nadu had urged the union government to consider extension of CET at least for the current year as they needed time to move over to the new system. The central government has got approval of the cabinet for the ordinance and sent the same to the President for his assent, it is learnt.

State medical education department director, Dr S S Harsoor, who provided this information, clarified that for deciding management seats of private colleges, NEET alone will be considered. However, there is confusion about filling up of government quota seats in private colleges. Therefore, the department is awaiting clear guidelines from the central government, grly Srikant, chief executive officer of Comed-K.

In all likelihood, CET result may be published on May 28, said Ramesh, executive director of Karnataka Examination Authority, adding that preparations are being made to publish result on May 28.

    The proposed Ordinance does not take out private medical colleges from the purview of NEET. The Ordinance is only to enable State Governments to complete their admission process through the respective State CETs conducted for State government medical colleges in various States. The sudden imposition of NEET on students who had spent two years preparing for their respective CETs was quite unfair. The SC should have allowed the State Governments to continue with their admission process for the current year and directed all private medical colleges to join either State Government CETs or the AIPMT for giving admissions into their medical colleges. NEET could have been implemented from next year. This would have given the students sufficient time to upgrade their syllabus and adapt to the new examination pattern. The Ordinance is a result of adamant posturing by the Supreme Court, which had overruled its own judgment of 2013. Therefore the Ordinance by Central Government is the most pragmatic step for the current year.
