Anantnag assembly seat bypoll on June 19

Srinagar, May 21 (IANS): The by-election for south Kashmir's Anantnag assembly seat will be held on June 19, a state Election Commission official said on Saturday.

The death of the then chief minister and sitting legislator Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7 in New Delhi necessitated the bypoll.

"Voting for the Anantnag seat will be held on June 19 and counting on June 22," the official said.

A notification for the by-election will be issued on May 25, giving out further details on the process, he added.

Sayeed's daughter and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is likely to contest the seat to enter the assembly.

At present, she represents south Kashmir's Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency in parliament.
