Mayor proposes water supply every two days if storage improves

Mangaluru, May 22: “Since the last two days, there has been steady improvement in the flow of water into Thumbay vented dam on which the entire city is dependent for its water requirement. Water level at present stands at 4.5 feet, and if the level improves to six feet, supply of water on alternative days would be considered. If it rises to nine feet, daily supply of tap water can be thought of,” said city mayor, Harinath.

The mayor visited Thumbay dam and River Netravati at Bastipadpu near Bantwal on Saturday and held discussions with officials.

Harinath noted that water level at the dam last year on this day was 12 feet as against maximum level of 13 feet. As western ghat regions are getting some rains, and water released from Nekkilady is flowing in, water level here is improving, he noted.

Harinath expressed relief, saying that he and others in the city corporation were very much worried when the water level fell to 3.7 feet. "The current level will enable us to continue water supply till month end. If there is good rain in between, our water problems will be solved," he stated.

Harinath was accompanied by chief whip, M Shashidhar Hegde, chairman of town planning standing committee, Lancelot Pinto, corporator, Muhammed, executive engineer, Linge Gowda, deputy executive engineer, Naresh Shenoy, and some others.

The corporation should take a massive drive in educating the public on various methods of water recharge and water harvesting through the media and door to door drive. Experts should be roped in to make it a serious campaign. Percolation pits should be built in sewers to increase the ground water levels .
