Centre releases Rs 606 crore to state for drought relief

May 24 (DHNS): The Centre on Monday released an amount of Rs 606.95 crore to Karnataka to provide compensation to farmers, who lost their crops during the rabi season.

Though the high-level committee under Home Minister Rajanath Singh had earlier approved Rs 723.23 crore, the Ministry of Finance had released only Rs 606.95 crore due to technical reasons.

The remaining amount will be released soon after getting some clarification from Karnataka, relating to spending of the money, sources told Deccan Herald.

Karnataka is the first state to get money from the Centre in the country for take up relief for damage of winter crop.

The state had requested Central assistance of Rs 1,417 crore after rabi crop worth Rs 7,209 crore was damaged.

The state, in its memorandum submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture, said winter crop sown in more than 24.64 lakh hectares, mainly in 12 districts, suffered damages due to low moisture.
