IT dept to 'name and shame' crorepati' defaulters this fiscal

New Delhi, May 24 (PTI): The Income Tax department, beginning this financial year, has decided to 'name and shame' all category of taxpayers who have a default of Rs one crore and above.

The department has begun publishing the names of tax defaulters in leading national dailies since last year and has named 67 such defaulters from across the country till now with their vital details like addresses, contacts, PAN card number and shareholders in case of companies.

The earlier exercise was restricted to people with huge defaults to the tune of about Rs 20-30 crore but the new measure will bring to the fore those names who have defaulted a tax of Rs 1 crore or more.

"It has been decided to 'name and shame' all category of taxpayers including personal and corporate taxpayers who have a default of Rs 1 crore and above by March, 31 which is the end of 2016-17 financial year.

"The names will be published before July 31 next year," a senior official said. An order in this regard, also accessed by PTI, has also been issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

The official said the aim of the exercise is to inform the public at large about such tax evaders whom the taxman has not been able to lay their hands on despite using various investigative and enforcement tools. The IT department has also provided a list of such names an identities on its official web portal.

Hope this exercise covers all sections of society and is strictly implemented, i.e., no exemption to be given/no mercy to be shown to any class of IT defaulters, whether it is a politician, blackmarketeer, businessman, Mandi-broker, builder, Swiss/Panama/Luxembourg/any other foreign bank black-money holder, Film Industry personality, etc. etc.

Punishment should be exemplary, with compounding of penalty, interest, prosecution costs to be included.

Deterrent punishment should be of such nature, that, no one should ever be tempted to evade their taxes, in future. All IT proceedings and meting out of punishment should be carried out expeditiously, with no scope for carry-over/adjournment of cases.
Loopholes in detection of Tax-evasion should be plugged, so as to maximize tax collection.

IT department is wrong in this case. Those people have paid taxes from so many years. So if you go and publish their names and say their taxes being waived off. That will make a difference for the time being..

Income tax law is so complicated that if you fill short form, money goes to Govt and if you fill long form, money goes to Accountant.
Owing to wrong interpretation of law, at least 10% of people get wrong demands. There are many instances where, people with taxable income of 10 lakhs have received demand of more than one crore tax, then matter drags on and finally what CAs opinion becomes generally right.
This name and shame is okay for those 90% of the people. But what about MPs and MLAs, who have multi crore illegal income ? They are exempted from shame !
