Puttur, May 26: The mortal remains of Shivashankar Acharya (70), a resident of Kulai near Mangaluru were found floating in River Netravati at Uppinangady. It is thought that Acharya would have committed suicide.

The body was found floating at a deep pocket inside the river known as 'Netravati Gaya' which is located downstream the confluence of River Netravati and River Kumaradhara at Uppinangady. Some locals who saw a body floating in the river, passed on information to police. The policemen, who arrived at the spot, worked for two hours along with locals, and succeeded in bringing the body out.

It looked as if Acharya had died two days back. His identity was established with the help of a cellphone, book of phone numbers and a slip issued by a hospital found in the shirt pocket. Acharya has left behind wife, two sons, and three daughters. Family members said that Acharya was missing since Tuesday morning, but they were not unduly perturbed as he often had the habit of leaving home without information and living with one of his children for a few days before returning.

On the basis of statement made by Acharya's son, Anoop Kumar, a case stands registered in Uppinangady police station.
