Rajan's reappointment should not be of media's interest: Modi

Washington, May 27 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the issue of reappointment of RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan was an administrative subject and it should not be an issue of interest of the media, in his first comments in the wake of continuing attack on the top economist in recent months.

"I don't think this administrative subject should be an issue of interest to the media," Modi said.

"Besides, it will come up only in September," he told The Wall Street Journal, referring to the three-year term of Rajan which ends in September.

"Do you support the reappointment of Mr Rajan, the central bank governor?" the Prime Minister was asked.

As an outspoken RBI Governor, Rajan has expressed his views on host of issues, including intolerance and has even described India as 'one-eyed king' in the land of blind in reference to the country's high economic growth.

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has levelled allegations against Rajan including of sending confidential and sensitive financial information around the world and asked the Prime Minister to sack him immediately.

The BJP leader also accused Rajan of publicly disparaging the Modi government and alleged that he is a member of "a US dominated group" that was set up to defend America's dominant position in the global economy.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said RBI and the government are in continuous dialogue and that relationship will continue. Jaitley also said that he does not approve of "personal comments" against anyone including the RBI Governor.

Had the sacking of Rajan been suggested by some non BJP person, Modi and his supporters would've shouted from rooftop 'No'. Now that the suggestion has come from Swamy, he's sidestepping calling it administrative subject.

In 2 years of BJP rule the NPA of banks has crossed more than 10 lakh crores. The NPA mess will continue and PM AND FM are sleeping. Gov Rajan is the only hope for the economy. If any chela of BJP is made RBI Governor then we can soon see rupee in three digits compared to the dollar.

You mean to say Kingfisher Airlines got bankrupt in last 2 years or in 2012..

If you have seen the NPA of the banks then you will come to from they started to inherit it..

Bankruptcy laws passed in 2016 is so good that, the many companies have started to sell their companies to clear their NPA's or else they will be in Jail for rest of their life..

CBI notice to Immigration to detain Kingfisher boss was changed to just to inform his travel plans and not to detain him in Dec 2015 which enabled him to take off to UK Scott free. It's crystal clear that everything was premeditated. When he took seven suitcases along with him, obviously must've left few brief cases behind to thwart any likely obstacle.
