Raghuram Rajan an outstanding economist, Modi govt doesn’t deserve him: Congress

New Delhi, May 28 (HT) : Former finance minister P Chidambaram on Saturday came out in support of RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, calling him “one of the most outstanding economists” in the world.

Chidambaram’s remarks came amid persistent attack on Rajan by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy .

“I am beginning to think whether this government deserves Dr Rajan,” he said, when asked whether the RBI governor should be given a second term. His three-year term ends in September.

Briefing reporters on the “failures” the NDA government in the last two years, Chidambaram parried questions on Swamy’s attack on Rajan. He said the Congress will respond only if Prime Minister Narendra Modi and finance minister Arun Jaitley speak against Rajan.

The main Opposition party on Friday dubbed Swamy’s attack against Rajan as “fascism and an assault” on the institution and not the individual.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his part, told The Wall Street Journal on Friday that the issue of reappointment of Rajan was an “administrative subject” and it should not be an issue of interest to the media .

In a letter to the PM a few days ago, Swamy had asked him to sack Rajan, charging that his insistence on high interest rate had led to recession in the domestic small and medium industries, causing not only a sharp decline in output but also massive unemployment of semi-skilled labour.

But Chidambaram defended Rajan.

“The UPA government appointed one of the most outstanding economists of the world as the RBI governor. We placed full confidence in him at that time and we continue to place full confidence in him today,” he said.

Asked if as the finance minister he had reservations about Rajan’s interest rate stand, Chidambaram said the UPA government had the best of relationship with all central bank governors, including Rajan.

“The world over, finance minister and central bank governor engage in such a dialogue that it does not mean the finance minister questions the competence of the RBI governor. Each one approaches economy from his or her perspective. Government’s perspective is growth. Central bank’s perspective is monetary stability,” he said.

He also made light of commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s “one-eyed king” remark against Rajan that caused controversy, saying vote can be taken on who is right and who is wrong.

I have a vision from my God, Lord Udupi Shri Krishna is that American, Canadian & British settled Indian origin successful, educated professionals like Dr. Raghuram Rajan are not hungry for wealth, name or fame. Only reason they ever come, visit or work in India is because of their love and concern for India. So I will banish all present day Indian politicians and rulers out from India and install a Rama Raja with imported un corrupt Indian origin professionals like Dr. Rajan, Governor Jindal, Governor Nickey Singh Haley, MP Keith Vas etc,. Please pray to Lord Krishna with clean mind and deed.

It reminds me of Mr.Sam Pitroda from Chicago. Thirty years back he was the one who introduced his C-Dot technology which turned India into a IT hub and a destination to outsource western jobs. He got the same treatment like Rajan is getting now. It is the intellectual Indian origins around the world who are curious to share their know-how for the betterment of their motherland.

Just read the news what is happening in Venezuela now. The 500% inflation wiped out 80% of accumulated wealth.

We need experienced professionals to run the economy, not the hawkers, street vendors and Harvard brain-dead professors turned politicians.

These Bhakts will wake up only when their accumulated wealth looses its purchasing power with hyper inflation.

Yeah.... well said. Congress led UPA had outstanding Economists including the former PM Manmohan Singh, but how they swallowed the nation by scam after scam during their rule is there in front of us. No need of any further explanation. Shameless people.....
Those who loot public money should suffer from the highest disease, only GOD has to punish them. Absolutely no hope on Judiciary as most of the Lawyers, Police & the Media are Corrupt.

He was the best pick of UPA, with his proven credentials as an economist. He has done admirably well, to manage the economy.

Subbu Swamy is an incredible failure as finance minister once already. He managed economy so well that, he had to mortgage indian gold reserves with IMF. That his credibility.

Now, Swamy is now key adviser to Modi and asks him to replace Rajan.

Some people in the government are nervous that the RBI governor is forcing the banks to reveal the names of big time defaulters (like Adnani). He also wants to stop the black money in real estate and stabilize the real estate prizes which the crony capitalists do not like.

Mr. Modi is now caught up in between the sea and the devil. Certain factor of the BJP through the perpetual rhetoric of the mentally disoriented Swami will be exerting high pressure upon Mr. Modi to put somebody like Srmati Irani through replacing Dr. Rajan.

Dr. Rajan is an internationally known Economist replacing him with some other BJP/RSS comrade will be a serious mistake for India.

Within a lawyer's estimate, Chidambaram spoke the truth, only truth but appeasing the Chief Whip meanwhile. Ultimately, the devoted & dedicated Governon cares two hoots beyond his term, if not extended. Being a green card holder, he may as well replace Janet Yellen, Chief of the US Fed Reserve (RBI of entire USA) after the ensuing elections there. Subramaniam Swamy will win & India will lose an Econ!!!

Raghuram Rajan is truly an outstanding Economist of Late PM Manmohan Singh stature with an exception of outspoken qualities.
Hope our Govt and opposition put nation's interest before their ego,
    Keep unwanted issues far,
Make S.Swami shut his dirty mouth, and let Raghuram Rajan function independently.

..Problem with Raghuram is after NDA forming Govt he was more on press..He was giving so many Interviews..and NDTV like channels are behind him waiting for some words so that they can connect it to NDA Govt..He may be good, but its better if he concentrate on administration, polices and lectures rather than giving Interviews to TRP hungry media..and let us not think that RAJAN like men will born once in a century..there are hundreds of eligible people..

RBI Governor Rajan is a distinguished Economist and his willingness to serve as a Governor of RBI is a blessing for India. He is working in India for USA's minimum wage. If he comes back to USA, there are company's lining up to hire him for million dollars compensation. It is not the money, but the love for his mother country Rajan accepted RBI position. Swamy should beg to Rajan to continue.
