Udupi, Nov 2: Two students of Manipal University drowned in the Arabian Sea at Kudle, under the Gokarna police station limits in Uttar Kannada district on Thursday November 1.
The deceased have been identified as Jishnu (20), a native of Malasia and Shashikumar alias Jinu (20) of Indore in Madhya Pradesh. Along with that a foreigner who went to rescue them too is missing. He is identified as Giles Farmer of England.
According to the police, eight students had gone on a trip to Gokarna. Two of them reportedly went for a swim despite repeated warnings by the locals that it is dangerous to swim in the sea.
As they ventured into the sea, they were washed away by raging waves. Two foreigners, that is, Envi Johan of Israel and Giles Farmer of England who saw them drowning in the sea jumped into the sea to rescue them. However, as the sea was very rough they could not save them. Though Giles was a good swimmer, he could not match the turbulent sea and he too was washed away. The bodies of the students are recovered. Search is on to trace Giles while Envi Johan is recovering in a hospital at Kumta.
A case has been registered at Gokarna police station in this regard.
