One soldier dies in Sri Lankan army camp fire

Colombo, Jun 6 (IANS): A soldier was killed and two others sustained injuries when a fire raged in an army camp just outside Colombo, the media reported on Monday.

Army spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said the fire started at an armoury and spread in the camp on Sunday, resulting in multiple explosions and forcing police to evacuate nearby villagers.

He said personnel from the air force and navy were sent to help douse the fire apart from the Colombo Fire Brigade.

The government has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct an investigation into the fire. The army is also expected to carry out a probe to determine the cause of the explosions.
