Beltangady: Rape attempt on passenger - auto rickshaw driver held

Beltangady, Jun 9: An auto rickshaw driver tried to rape a woman who was returning home alone after work, on Tuesday June 7 evening. The incident occurred at Sabarabail in Sonandur village in the taluk.

The accused has been identified as Adam (23), a resident of Pilichandikallu in Kuvettu village. He has been arrested.

The woman, who works at Aladangady was waiting for bus at Guruvayanakere bus stop to go to her home at Ballal Gate, Sabarabail. The auto rickshaw driver, who approached her when she was waiting for bus, told her that he was bound for Panakaje, and invited her to travel by his three-wheeler to her home. Without picking any other passengers on the way like other auto rickshaws, he rode the three-wheeler towards Panakaje, it is said.

When the vehicle reached near her home, the lady asked the driver to stop. When she was paying him auto fare, the driver reportedly held her hand tight, and also groped her. When she shouted for help, some locals rushed to her rescue. Later, the accused was handed over to the police.

Punjalkatte police, who registered case, produced the accused in the court upon which he was remanded to judicial custody.
