PM Modi masters skills of using teleprompters during high profile speeches

New Delhi, Jun 10 (Agencies) : As American Congressman rose to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on an incredible speech on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, an intense discussion erupted on social media about whether or not the Indian premier had chosen to go US President Barack Obama way and use a teleprompter to address the joint session.

While some were convinced the prime minister had delivered an extempore speech, like he usually does when he addresses public rallies back home, others were convinced that the trusted teleprompter was at hand to help Modi with his impressive speech in English. Soon, Twitter was flooded with photographs of Modi at the US Congress with two teleprompters on either side.

Over the next couple of hours, media reports confirmed the teleprompter theory.

Incidentally, according to reports, Modi first spoke using a teleprompter in July 2014 during the PSLV launch in July at the Indian Space Research Organisation. He continued to use the device intermittently on his subsequent foreign trips, especially when he had to deliver his speeches in English. Used as we are to clunky monitors that scroll down text as it is read out, the latest versions are hard to spot. Which explains why many were convinced the PM did not use one on Capitol Hill.

How does the teleprompter work?

For Prime Minister Modi’s speech, a StagePro Presidential Teleprompter Series was likely to have been used, a popular device on the lecture circuit as well and which displays smooth scrolling text on glass reflection monitors. While the text is clearly seen from behind the lectern, it is completely invisible to the audience in front since the screen is transparent from the other side. Behind the scenes is a teleprompter operator, controlling the speed of the scrolling text, carefully following the pace of the speaker.

During the speech, the speaker simply looks from one teleprompter to the other. This gives an impression that he is looking at the audience while giving his speech.

A teleprompter operator feathers the speed of the script to match the pace of the speaker. If the speaker slows down or stops, like during a standing ovation of which Modi received quite a few, then the operator will follow suit. Some modern, lower grade systems can operate without an operator by using a preset speed on loop, but it can be unnerving to the speaker to follow a machine.

The prompter operator also interacts with the camera crew and sets up the teleprompter equipment so everything is connected to the tripod and balanced correctly. Plus, an operator edits the script and often wordsmiths the lines. Phrases that look good on paper don’t always sound great when spoken aloud.

When teleprompters embarrass

Some critics say politicians who rely on teleprompters are more performers than leaders. But that really depends on what the politician says and how he says it. The teleprompter is merely a performance device. It doesn't write the speech or control what is being said, or how.

The danger with teleprompter use is that the speaker will be more focused on reading the words than in conveying a sense of understanding about what he's saying. The prime minister, an inveterate speaker, has clearly mastered the art of using the device.

But he too had to undergo a learning curve. For instance, in February 2015, Modi became the butt of jokes on the social media when he took his teleprompter a little too literally.

While greeting visiting Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and his wife, Modi committed a gaffe, by calling the visiting first lady, M R S Sirisena.

The gaffe that was reminiscent of a Doordarshan anchor who lost her job for a similar misreading, as she had referred to Chinese President Xi Jinping as 'Eleven' Jinping during his visit to India.

Clearly, Prime Minister Modi seems to have mastered the skill over time.

Why not? The Americans will surely and happily aploud Mr Modi, because he is yielding to total American philosophy of crazy capitalism. Let him be a man eater or a human butcher, they want a total supporter of American way of capitalism. They would not like Nehru or Indira who were socialist bent of mind more aligned with communist Russia, but they would agree with PV Narasimharao or Man Mohan Singh who toe the line of America. The oppressor class of present India will enjoy American company.

you can never know about the ways of U.S.A. and behind that praise\standing ovation and ample extra praise lavished on Modiji's speech in the aftermath.
They do not praise anyone or give in to none unless they are profited by it. Right now it is hard to tell why such "High" praise. Time only will tell. Modiji's chest has swelled more and we are happy about it.
But Modi really gave a speech, TPs or TPs. Impressive not by personal knowledge but assisted and it has been accepted. That is all we want - right? He is a glib orator.
Let us hope for best results by his etc. efforts. We want good for our Nation...!! That is what Modiji's is trying for....or is it for personal glory?

Narendra Modi's teleprompter fail puts him in hallowed company, while greeting visiting Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and his wife, Modi committed quite a gaffe, by calling the visiting first lady, M.R.S. Sirisena. Oh dear.

He mastered his skills in 'Entire political science' course granted by Delhi university.

As a result,It has been repeatedly observed that Narendra Modi's recalling of Indian history is imprecise. In Patna, he said Takshashila was in Bihar it is in Pakistan. He also said Porus was defeated on the banks of the Ganga that battle with Alexander never went beyond the Jhelum river in Pakistani Punjab.

I believe my convent childhood mates are mastered reading from the books than this teleprompters.

A person's orating skill can be judged when he takes question from audience and answers promptly.

Let me also give u some facts - pappu needs a note to write tribute to Nepali earthquake tragedy, maun Mohan would not take his head from the sheet of paper during the independence day speech (and he's addressing our own people). Mauni didn't get so many standing ovations. Mauni took autograph from Obama for his daughters sake, here Congressmen are taking it from ModI. Pappu needs capitalised note on Gandhijis 3 monkeys to speak in Parliament. Siddu keeps sleeping doesn't even attempt to speak. Oh wait, did I forget momma, she gets entire speech written in English which are pronounced in Hindi. Such is the pathetic condition and you are rejoicing this news item. In international arena, where one has to be extremely careful about his speech, it is highly unlikely that anyone will speak extempore. No doubt, a battalion of IFS and IAS officers were behind the speech writing. Knowing well that Modi's English is average, the chances that he himself will do an extempore is less likely. What is important is the message delivered.
When it is extempore - issues like Somalia reference in Kerala could happen. (A PM of a country cannot ridicule another sovereign nation, irrespective of its' condition).
If in doubt watch Pakistani media channels where they are ripping Pak government apart for not matching Modi's political assault in international stage.

Even the "andh" (completely) bhakts did not know Modiji was using some device and reading out prepared speeches, with lots of time in between words to make use of his long arms in the air, to show listeners that he is thinking and cautiously using proper words and delivering a wonderful speech and of course it had it's effect.
Now that they know, he is not the real thinker but just a presenter of the written ideas and words, the interest to listen to his speeches may diminish in the future.

But no one, I think, can beat him in fekuism.
What to say about "andh Bhakts". Whenever such fekuism is brought to their attention, they have only one way out - refer to some Italian waitress and some Pappu to get out of their ignorance!!! The problem was his accent was a mixture of Gujarathi & village which showed the inadequacy of Premier of Great Nation.
He was caught here as well as when Obama attended Republic Day Parade, he was asking questions & our PM was just looking other way while an interpreter sitting behind was communicating. Our PM's interaction with Obama was broadcast in some channels in US which too showed her with her voice, which conveys that our PM is incapable to understand what he reads proving Aap's charge that his degrees are fake.

Whats wrong in it ? You need to be educated to use TECHNOLOGY for the convenience and not the notes written in paper ...And , I heard some one recently used paper note even to write one sentence...

Dear Praveen, Udupi... are you OK man. Modi never said he is not using anything like teleprompters... did he ? are you aware that so many world class speakers use it. Many of the corporative utives also use it. Now just because you people wanted something or the other to pull Modi, you only picked the subject. Modi went as a PM and not as a English scholar or lecturer. As far as he conveys his message and world leaders listen to him... enough. Evidence is the flooding foreign investments... also so many agreements signed in 2 decades... are you aware what's going on.. or just dreaming and planning to list facts to pull Modi down. Instead give some suggestions to your so called High Command which is almost collapsed. they may need your inputs... please stop pulling Modi, he is the Prime Minister of India.

NaMO has represented India as a PM not as an English Lecturer. He had been there to get at least some thing for India and he got it. He was not there to prove his English grammar skill. Common guys be practical and be Indians. I noticed his "Desi English" accent. But is English language a tool to fathoms one's intellectual stuff?

Even america's strong ally Netayanhu not received as much standing ovation as compare to modiji. People in India as well as all over in the world now understand modiji very well. Earlier government only introduced modiji as a villain. More of appreciation poured-on from all quarters of the world.
India is not having threat from outside..but within..who try to spoil integrity of nation. Should dealt them with heavily not giving chance for grow-up. Jai Hind..

I don't find it any big deal. He used teleprompter ... so what.. most of them use it. . PM has gone there and got a standing ovation that shud be appreciated. This rule applies to even Ex PMS (if they hve got standing ovations) . I am not getting biased & I am not supporting Modi but its a fact. I will appreciate even if RAGA or Kejri does the same. Guys he is representing our country and try TP put India forward. I seen people seeing reading from some paper and still making mistakes in his / her speech. I was going thru YouTube, The most sad part is our neighbors / arch rival Pakistan is appreaciating his working model and approach with other countries and reaching out and we Indians are making a silly news item that he used Teleprompter. Once again I am saying Baaki sab gaya baad mein, I want my India to develop chahe Modi ho, Pappu ho ya Kejri ho.

Come on ! What ever it be he is the PM of India. PM represents the people of India in US and he is not meant for negative criticism. It does not matter as to how he spoke - it matters as to what he spoke- whether it boost the image of India is the subject. He is a natural speaker in public platforms attracting the minds of crowds sitting in front. That we all have to admit . During Manmohan Sonia herself was teleprompter . Give Same Facility to Sonia or Rahul or any Other Indian Leader..Can He or She Deliver Such Speach ? Rahuls speaking capabilities are very clear in the youtube video 'Rahul Gandhi with Jackie Shroff' .

There is no doubt Modi is a gifted speaker, But English is a problem as much as the British. misreading Mrs as M.R.S- Sirisena and misreading Chinese President Xi Jinping as 'Eleven' Jinping is a major disaster. We all know that teleprompters have no brain so we need to use ours.

Still at this age also try to improve himself..for the people of our nation. Can anybody else do it. We are ofcourse lazy fellows..not active like our prime minister.

Besides he said Konark temple is 2000 years old and a women sculpted on the wall is holding a leather purse and wearing skirt like Americans, and Australia got its name from Astra (weapons) hidden by Pandavas on Shamee tree in Australia 4000 years ago.
