Bhatkal, Jun 25: As the time of fasting and prayer during the holy month of Ramadan comes to close with only ten days to go, many beggars and some in the guise of beggars have arrived in town for alms. During this holy month, giving donation and alms is common practice observed by devout Muslim families.

Bhatkal is known for giving alms and donation during the holy month. Most of the residents of the town are owners of businesses abroad and well known for Zakat or donations. Alms giving for poor families in Bhatkal and surrounding areas have been going on since generations. This fact is well known in the country and the number of people begging here has been increasing since the last five to six years.

More than half of people who come for alms do not fast during the month and their profession is also not begging. People from distant Kashmir to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are coming to Bhatkal to receive alms.

Such people can be seen in every lane of Bhatkal now. Some who are physically challenged go around here as if they have for employment. Thousands of people in the guise of beggars have joined them. There is no dearth of blind and lame. Those who are physically well, put forth small children for begging. They wander from colony to colony during the day and sleep in bus stands and outside shops at nights.

Some eat their food also in such places. It is said that some also stay in lodges and vacate them in the mornings. Now that Ramzan market is getting ready, there is huge crowd in the vicinity.

Amidst all this, theft menace has also increased. As the number of people coming to Bhatkal for alms has increased, the menace of thefts is also on the rise. Thieves wait for the people to go for prayers, and then they break their doors and steal. There have been thefts in four to five houses in the month of fasting. Several lacs in cash and jewellery have been stolen. Identifying thieves among beggars has become a challenge for the police.

Bhatkal ASP Dr Anup Shetty says that a large number of beggars have come to Bhatkal and the police have kept a watch on their movements. “Police beats are increased in the nights. Additional police personnel are being called from other taluks and they will be deployed in sensitive places,” he said.

    Mr.Gireesh,

Sir,Zakat has been described in the Quran as obligatory on all believers. It is often noted twinned with the directive to establish salat and appears consistently throughout the Quran.

The first point to note is that the establishment of Zakat (plural) did not start with new Muslims from Arabia or after the establishment of the Islamic state during the time of Prophet Muhammad. (pbuh) The obligation to pay Zakat has always existed and has remained a duty ordained by God. So to understand 'Zakat' as a once a year 2.5% payment on savings is incongruent with the Quranic text.

Giving Zakat (Support of the Needy) is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Noone desire to become beggar. But financial constraints and circumstances leads one to seek help.

If the system is voluntary and truly implemented there will be no poverty on earth.

These beggers only appear during Ramadhan and not occasionally. It's tradition in Islam to give alm tow poverty stricken family by minimum 2.5% on your belongings. Let them follow what they want.

Dear Brethren charity is a good act only thing it should not be misused. begging is a big racket especially where small infants and children are concerned. The little infants are given hafim and other drugs so that they sleep throughout the begging act and small children are made to beg in the sun cold rain without any clothes near religious places, traffic signals etc.. these little children are given targets which are difficult to achieve the goondas who are selfish cruel heartless will even maim the children if they cannot bring enough money and we are encouraging the goondas by giving money to children so that these goondas bring more children into begging stop giving money to women with infants in arm and small children instead try to rehabilitate the children begging. this is the only way today somebody else child is kidnapped or bought from poor parent and used in begging racket tomoro it can be our child. Remember a child once in racket cannot even runaway becos police are helping goondas for hafta. this is the truth. You may google and check regarding begging racket in India. God will never forgive us if we give money to child beggars and thus help goondas to bring more children in racket. PLS. PEOPLE THIS EVERY INDIAN SHOULD KNOW. WISHING YOU'LL A HOLY RAMADAN

Giving hand is much superior than the accepting one as depicted in Hades.Glorious Quran strictly told the categories of beneficiaries of zakat or Charitarian donations but it's largely misused even by the capable public. The best charity is the one which goes to a genuine believer who never shows his poor sufferings externally but require the help indeed. If somebody in groups staying in lodge seasonally just to collect donations means misusing the concept of one of the pillar of the religion.

Most of the 90% beggars are not born beggars.Circumstances make them to beg. If all Muslims sincerely give Zaqaat according to religion, there will be no poor Muslim in the world. In all the religion people have to give certain amount of their earnings in charity.People should celebrate their children birthday or any celebrations at any orphanage and festivals like Diwali,Eid and Christmas at old age homes. You can make them happy bringing smile on their face. This may give more blessings than anything.

Going through the pic's anyone who begs is not physically challenged. All looks physically fit but like to beg!! Interesting. In developed countries beggars are considered as lazy people. Our most of the paddy fields are not done due to lack workers., by the way going to pub is not everyone's cup of tea , as they don't sell idli sambar there
