Achyutha (43), a resident near Kumpala Balakrishna Mandira is the person deceased. Sunday being a holiday, he had gone by auto rikshaw accompanied by his friends Madooru resident Sathish and Talapady resident Narayana to Bettampady sea shore to pick sea shells. They had got down to the salt lake and were picking the shells.
As sand mining is taking place in the area, there were huge holes in the lake in the middle. Achyutha who did not know them went further. He got stuck in the water current and was washed away. As his friends Sathish and Narayan did not know to swim, Achyutha tried to rescue them, but drowned.
Another group consisting of six people had come from Pilar to the place to pick sea shells. Out of them Kumpala resident Harish (36) knew swimming. Harish and his friends, who saw the three men getting drowned, jumped in the water and saved the lives of Sathish and Narayana. Local Hameed who was at the shore with his boat ferried Sathish and Narayana in his boat to the shore.
Achyutha was a daily wage worker. His wife is employed in a hospital. Ullal station police arrived and registered a complaint. A search is on for Achyutha's body.
