Mangalore, Nov 17: If better understanding and implementation of the very meaning of the word and concept of FAMILY(Father and Mother, I Love You ) is followed, then the realization of positive, functional, and healthy relationships would neither be improbable nor rarity, Dr Parthasarathy, professor of department of Psychiatric Social Work, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore said on Friday November 16.
He was speaking at the seminar organized by Family Cosmos Forum (FCF), Roshni Nilaya, School of Social Work.
He was addressing the gathering at inter-school and inter-collegiate level seminar on ‘Enhancing Parent - Adolescent Relationships’ held at the seminar hall, Roshni Nilaya, School of Social Work,.
The organizing seminars would promote cordial relationships which are to be encouraged and well attended, as they are more relevant to the society, since they keep matrix of relationships in families safer and stronger, he advised.
The salient feature of counselling must aim at bringing about radical, but positive changes in the counselee's behaviour. If it fails then it means that the process seems to be not effective. A counsellor must bear in mind the thin line of difference which lies between intellectual insight and emotional insight. Undergoing the process of counselling implies preparing self to acquire intellectual insight, not to gain total emotional insight, which takes time to run its course, he added.
Mere understanding of life skills is not enough; rather putting them into practice makes it indispensable. Mutual understanding among family members can become single panacea for the difficulties, such as behavioural adjustments while emphasizing on vital aspects like ‘visibility of activity’ into serious consideration.
Multiplied effect would not be realized unless unconditional love is offered in families. One should give up nagative thinking, Dr Jacinta D'Souza, principal, Roshni Nilaya, School of Social Work, advised in her presidential address.
