Udupi, Nov 17: Director of Yakshagana Kendra Heranje Krishna Bhat informed that the ‘Festival of traditional and ritualistic theatre’ will be held from November 20 to 27, jointly organized by the National School of Drama, New Delhi (NSD), Academy of General Education, Regional Resources Centre (AGERRC) for folk and performing arts, and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) college along-with the Yakshagana Kendra,.
Addressing media persons here recently Heranje Bhat stated that the theme of the festival would be “A journey into the discovery of cultural roots”.
The festival is held as part of a workshop for the second year students of NSD, New Delhi. As many as 19 students from NSD, Delhi, two students from abroad, and nine resource persons would participate in the workshop.
Former director of NSD Devendra Raj Ankur would be inaugurating it on Tuesday, November 20. The schedule of programmes to be presented during the workshop from Nov 20 to 28 is: “Jodata” by Amriteshwari Mela and Singadooru Mela on November 20; “Panchavati” by Yaksha Manjusha (Tenkuthittu) on November 21; folk drama, “Avvennavva”, on November 23.
Yakshagana ballet, “Jatayu Moksha”, by students of Yakshagana Kendra on November 24; Tala Maddale, “Pattabhishekha”, and Mudalapaya Yakshagana, by Tumkur Dasachar on November 25; String-puppet show by Sri Gopalakrishna Bombeyata Sangha of Kasaragod on November 26; “Bhoota Kola” by Dengu Panar of Hiriyadka on November 27; and Doddata, “Girija Kalyana”, on November 28.
According to Prof Bhat the NSD students, who would receive training in Yakshagana at the Yakshagana Kendra, would render two Yakshagana performances at the Muddanna Mantap in MGM College on December 24 and 25.
Principal of MGM College Jayaprakash Mavinakuli was also present at the press meet.
