Madikeri, Jul 15: The Kodagu district bandh call given by Hindu Jagran Vedike and Vishwa Hindu Parishad demanding to entrust suicide case of DySP, M K Ganapati, to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Thursday July 14 proved to be peaceful and successful. The bandh was held from 6 am to 6 pm on Thursday.

The bandh was voluntary in nature and it was supported by Kodagu District Chamber of Commerce, Private Bus Owner Association, and various other organizations and institutions.

Shops and establishments remained closed, while auto rickshaws, private buses, and government buses did not undertake trips. Schools and colleges had been closed, and government offices did not function. Some of the offices, which had started functioning, were closed at the behest of protestors.

Pro-Hindu organizations and BJP activists protested at a few places by burning tyres and blocking traffic, besides raising slogans against chief minister, Siddaramaiah, and minister, K J George. They demanded registration of case against George and two senior police officers named by Ganapati. They also burnt effigies of Siddaramaiah and George. Protests were mainly held at Madikeri, Virajpet, and Somwarpet.

Police had been posted in large numbers all over the district to keep an eye on law and order situation. While inspector general, Bijoy Kumar Singh, visited Virajpet, Hassan superintendent of police, Asharani, visited Somwarpet. District superintendent of police, Rajendra Prasad, had arranged for posting of personnel at strategic places across the district.

President of Advocates Council, Pavan Pemmaiah, and several other advocates visited the spot of protest, expressed their support, and demanded for CBI inquiry into the suicide. MP, Pratapsimha, district BJP president, Manu Muttappa, zilla panchayat president, B A Harish, Bajrang Dal leader, Ajit, Monti Ganesh, and a number of other leaders participated in the protest.
