India-born Muslim cop security in-charge of Hindu temple in US

Washington, Jul 24 (PTI): A Mumbai-born Muslim police officer is the security in-charge of the largest Hindu temple in the Indianapolis city of US, setting an example of inter- faith cooperation and social harmony at a time when religious intolerance rhetoric is on the rise due to the election cycle.

An eight-degree black-belt in Taekwondo and a kick boxing champion, Lt Javed Khan from the local police department is director of security at the Hindu temple in Indianapolis.

For hundreds of visitors thronging the temple daily, in particularly over the weekend, Khan, who was born in Mumbai and raised in Lonavla, Pune, is now considered a part and parcel of the Hindu temple.

"My message is this; we are all one. We are all the children of God. There is only one God and then there are different forms and names, we choose to worship," Khan told PTI in a phone interview from Indianapolis.

"We are Indians. Half my family is Hindu. I do not believe in Hindu-Muslim thing," he said.

"I am just doing my duty. I am not doing anything special or extraordinary," Khan said when asked for an interview.

Khan settled in Indiana in 2001, a year after he migrated to the United States. He had been coming to the US since 1986 for participating in various martial arts championship.

Khan said it all started a few years ago, when he married his daughter to a Telugu boy at this Hindu temple, after which he started knowing people at the temple.

Soon, he said, "I felt there is need over there for protection. Then I offered my services. I am director of security for the temple now. While the temple has been in existence for the past several years, its formal opening ceremony -- Kumbhabhishekam -- was held last year, which was attended by top state leaders."

"Your place of worship adds another significant landmark to the city of Indianapolis and I am certain that it will play a key role in enriching the cultural heritage of our state, as well as, the learning and spiritual growth of its devotees and visitors," Indiana Governor Mike Pence had said in a message in June last year at the time of the formal opening of the temple built at an estimated cost of USD 10 million. Pence is now the vice presidential candidate of the Republican party.

"Whenever, I go to temple, I do not even feel I am in America. I feel I am in India," Khan said, sharing his experience.

"We have some great people here. People are nice," said Khan. He is at the temple every Sunday and sometimes Friday nights and then as and when required.

For the temple visitors, many consider him from the Hindu faith. "He (Khan) provides us security on the weekends and at major events," said Ravi Pattar, chairman of temple Board of Trustees.

"He has been deputed by the police department," Pattar said.

"This is very refreshing. He takes a very keen interest in providing security to the temple," said Dr Mohan Razdan, an eminent Indian-American who played a key role in the construction of the temple. "Everybody knows him in the temple and respects him," he said.

"This (a Muslim protecting a temple) is unheard of in this day and time. It sends a strong message," Razdan said.

The great tragedy the humanity is now faced with is the bloodshed under the banner of religion.

GOD is not the founder of the religions. If we have GOD in our personal lives, we will love each other because GOD IS LOVE.

Why to make a big issue. Western countries don't care what religion, cast you belong to, they care only your education level and skills for the job.

Whichever religion you were born or you have chosen.....When the death comes, none of your God or God's help you...You have to die and even your loving God will never help you. So live and love all others irrespective of their religion and faith.

Religion is made by human beings and not by God (If he exists). Our religion is imposed on us by birth( There may be a few exceptions who chose after birth). I am a Christian by birth since my parents were Christians, I don't think anything is great about it. Many were born in their respective religions without their choice...!!!??? Feeling great about their own religion and hating other religions is a stupid act, which is seen mostly nowadays. In such a situation future will never be good, unless human race realize their mistake soon.

I agree with you. One has to help each other as one humanity. Live and let live. Follow the path of truth and message of one humanity to achieve peace on earth. Make this place a better place to live. Instead of longing for heaven after death which we have not seen.

yes, true, you feel more comfortable when you read such news. But this is in USA where religion is not as important as in India or asia. I was really surprised to see Omani local arab guarding old shiva temple in Muscat. I visited that temple in late 80's and was really surprised an grey bearded old local in kandura greeting the visitors Radhe Shyam instead of salam alekum. Every day he used to come early morning, stay there till maha aarati in the noon, takes prasad and ho home. Further surprising was his salary was paid by the Omani govt. Is it not a good gesture from an Arab govt towards hinduism????

Your posting reflects you are not happy with the headline.... Anyways the master's answer for your query will be from the holy quran as follows which he repeated thousand times in his public speech.

“O you who do not believe! I worship not what you worship, and you are not worshipping what I worship nor am 1 worshipping what you worship neither -art you worshipping what I worship. Therefore, to you your religion and to me my religion!” (chap. 109)

    Mr Moshu,

“O you who do not believe! I worship not what you worship, and you are not worshipping what I worship nor am 1 worshipping what you worship neither -art you worshipping what I worship. Therefore, to you your religion and to me my religion!”

It seems from the quote above that one should respect another religion not interfere with it. However, Mr ZN had not criticized when he was asked a question on destruction of Buddha statues in Afghanistan, He failed to criticize it. I am sure his selective quotes are a reflection of his mindset.

How could he not understand the verse he himself quotes.

Never.. its not consider idol worship. In fact The circling is believed to demonstrate the unity of the believers in the worship of the One God, as they move in harmony together around the Khana Kaaba, while supplicating to Almighty Allah.

This is an evident lie, we do not worship the [black] stone but rather we touch it and kiss it - the same as the Messenger of Allaah SallAllahu 'alayhi wasallam did - in worship of Allaah and in emulating the Messenger of Allaah SallAllahu 'alayhi wasallam. The [Black] Stone is from the signs of Allaah similar to when we stand in 'Arafah, similar to when we stay in Muzdalifah and similar to when we circumambulate around the House (the Ka'bah). Likewise we kiss the Black Stone and touch it or gesture towards it because it is from the signs of Allaah. Hence our kissing it or touching it or signalling towards it is in worship of Allaah not the stone. Furthermore, for this reason when 'Umar ibn al-Khattab radhiallaah 'anhu kissed the [black] stone he said:
"Indeed I know that you are but a stone you neither benefit nor harm, and if it was not that I saw the Messenger of Allaah SallAllahu 'alayhi wasallam kiss you I would not have kissed you."
    [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (1597), and Muslim (1270)]

Therefore the issue is regarding the matter of following and adhering and not worship of the stone. So they contrive lies against us whilst we do not worship the Ka'bah but rather we worship the Lord of the Ka'bah, so we circumambulate around the Ka'bah in worship of Allaah the Mighty and the Majestic because Allaah has commanded us with that, so we obey Allaah the Mighty and the Majestic and we follow His Messenger SallAllahu 'alayhi wasallam .

    Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan, 'Aqeedatul-Haaj Fee dawil-Kitaab was-Sunnah, p22-23.
