Lokpal and Lokayukta amendment bill introduced in Lok Sabha

New Delhi, July 27 (IANS): A bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday to amend the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013 to enable the leader of the single largest oppposition party in the house being made a member of the committee that would select the ombudsman.

Minister for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh introduced the bill.

The Lokpal Acts provide for a Selection Committee for making appointments to the ombudsman. The committee includes the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The Bill amends this provision to state that the leader of the single largest opposition party in the House would be part of the Selection Committee, in the absence of a recognised Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
