UP district tense after clashes over eve-teasing

Lucknow, Aug 1 (IANS): Heavy police reinforcements have been rushed to Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh where the situation was tense after clashes late Sunday night between two communities over an incident of eve-teasing, police said on Monday.

People from two communities came to blows in Qazi Katra locality late on Sunday after some girls returning from a dancing coaching class were reportedly teased.

An official informed IANS that the situation spiralled out of control as stones were pelted from both sides and that about six people were injured.

The police responded to the situation quickly and the situation was brought under control in two hours. A religious place was also targeted during the clash.

Superintendent of Police (Bahraich) Saligram Verma told IANS that the situation was under control, but as a precautionary measure additional force has been deputed in the troubled area.

A case has been registered against unknown persons and efforts were on to identify the mischief makers, he said.
