'Chauthi Koot' pure, honest and cinematic: Nandita Das


Mumbai, Aug 3 (IANS): Actor-director Nandita Das has lauded "Chauthi Koot", the first Punjabi language film which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. She says the movie is "amazingly pure, honest and cinematic".

Nandita, who has contributed in films like "Aks","Provoked" and "Fire" and helmed films like "Firaaq", took to Facebook to praise the film.

"Saw 'Chauthi Koot' Amazingly pure, honest and cinematic. It's releasing tomorrow, August 5. Do see if you are open to watching a different kind of film, if you want to support independent cinema and if you care about diverse stories," Nandita wrote.

She also shared that the film has subtitles in English.

"It has English subtitles, so let not it being Punjabi stop you from the experience," she added.

Directed by Gurvinder Singh, "Chauthi Koot", which is set to release pan-India on Friday, was screened in the 'UnCertain Regard' section at the Cannes Film Festival.

Set during the Sikh separatist movement during the 1980s, "Chauthi Koot" has been adapted from two stories written by Waryam Singh Sandhu called "Chauthi Koot" and "Hun Main Theek Haan". The film was shot mostly around Amritsar and Ferozepur in Punjab.

Among other accolades, the film was screened in over 13 international and Indian film festivals and won the best film award in the India Gold section at MAMI, 2015 along with the 2016 National Award for the best feature in the Punjabi language.

The film has been produced by Kartikeya Singh under his banner The Film Café along with France based Catherine Dussart of Catherine Dussart Productions and National Film Development Corporation (India).
