Udupi, Aug 4: Police arrested two cattle thieves near Ambalpady junction and rescued 21 cows and calves which were being transported to Mangaluru illegally in a Mahindra pickup vehicle for slaughter on Wednesday, August 3.
The arrested have been identified as Abubakar Sadique (31) and Iqbal (28). Asif and Shabbir, two other accused fled from the spot. All four accused are the residents of Mangaluru.
The accused had kept 21 stolen cows and calves at Kavadi on Tuesday before loading them into the vehicle on Wednesday.
Udupi police had tried to waylay the vehicle at Santhekatte based on a tip-off from Brahmavar police but the accused had fled without stopping. The police then managed to stop the vehicle at Ambalpady junction and arrested the two.
The police have sent the animals to Neelavar. There was a pregnant cow among them.
Udupi police have registered a case.
The accused were produced in court and sent to judicial custody.
