IOC agrees to abide by CAS ruling against 'double jeopardy' of Russian athletes

Rio de Janeiro, Aug 6 (IANS): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will abide by the recently passed ruling of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against punishing already-sanctioned Russian athletes twice over anti-doping violations.

"We are naturally disappointed that the Court of Arbitration for Sport considered our measures against doped athletes too tough. We of course accept their judgement," an statement from IOC said on Friday, reports Tass.

The Swiss-based court for sports ruled on Friday to allow two Russian rowers, who had been previously sanctioned for doping infractions and had served their penalties, to enter the Summer Games.

This ruling came in spite of the IOC's July 24th decision stating that it had earlier not been allowed for Russia's governing Olympic body to enter any national athlete into the 2016 Rio Games, who had been previously "sanctioned for doping, even if he or she has served the sanction."
