Heavy rains in Uttarakhand, rivers in spate


Dehradun, Aug 8 (IANS): Uttarakhand has been experiencing very heavy rains, with rivers flowing near the danger mark and more downpours forecast.

The Regional Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rains in Uttarakhand over the next 48-hours.

It has been raining heavily in Uttarkashi since Sunday night, following which the Gangotri highway was blocked at four places -- at Laldhang, Malla, Helgu Gadhi and Gangnani.

An official told IANS that the Ganga river was flowing at 292.65 metres in Haridwar, and that rains are likely to occur at Nainital, Ranikhet and Almora.

The Kali river at Dharchula was flowing at 888.54 metres, just two metres below the danger mark. Tori and Saryu rivers were also in spate, and flowing close to the danger mark.
