Meghalaya flags IS threat to Centre

Shillong, Aug 12 (IANS): Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Thursday said his government had flagged the IS threat to the central government.

"We have flagged the issue (threat from the Islamic State) to the central government much before such perception persisted," Sangma told journalists after chairing a Cabinet meeting which discussed the state's preparedness for the coming Independence Day.

The Chief Minister also called for concerted efforts among the security agencies in the north-eastern states to deal with the issue of terrorism.

"We have been maintaining that apart from strengthening our internal security apparatus, we also prevailed upon the Centre on this issue, as we need collaborative effort to overcome the challenges," he said.

"We all saw the recent senseless killings in Assam's Kokrajhar. Any incident in any other state is a matter of concern for us too. We need to address the problem collectively, and we hope we can deal with the situation," he added.
