Five killed in Philippine rains

Manila, Aug 14 (IANS): At least five persons were killed and over 70,000 individuals displaced due to monsoon rains in the Philippines, the state disaster management agency said on Sunday.

The victims either drowned or were killed by collapsing walls, Xinhua news agency quoted the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council as saying.

A total of 5,665 families were affected in six regions with 5,139 still inside 52 evacuation centers.

The state forecasting agency warned that monsoon rains, which may trigger flashfloods and landslides, would still prevail over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Mimaropa regions.
