Want to change lives of common people, says Modi in I-Day speech

New Delhi, Aug 15 (Agencies): Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation on India’s 70th Independence Day on Monday said the focus of his government was to change the lives of the common people and that it has already improved the quality of governance dramatically.

"When I talk about surajya (good governance) ... the meaning is to bring changes in the life of the common man," he said.

Delivering his speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi talked about his government’s achievement and added that it also needs to increase the pace of its work.

India must scale newer heights

The energy in India can help it to scale newer heights of progress, Modi said.

"Today on this special day, I convey my greetings to 125 crore Indians and the Indian community living overseas. May this energy guide the nation to scale newer heights of progress in the years to come."

India faces "lakhs of problems" but it also has 125 crore brains that are capable of overcoming them.

Fear of taxation

Modi said the middle class is more scared of income tax officials than the police, adding that his government will change this.

"There was a time an honest citizen would pay tax, but once the money went into the government’s coffers, refunds would take months," the PM said referring to refunds of tax deducted at source.

"In fact, while income tax refunds used to take forever earlier, it takes no more than three weeks today," he said.

1.45 crore passports in a year

Modi said while it took six to eight months to get a passport, it just takes a couple of weeks now even though around two crore people apply for it annually now compared to 40-50 lakh application earlier.

The government issued 1.45 crore passports in 2015-16, Modi said.

People do not need any recommendation now to secure passports, he added.

"We have also connected 70 crore Indians to Aadhaar and social security schemes," he said in his address.

India online

He said his government had taken decisions to help people make online bookings to visit hospitals.
Citing the example of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, he said similar changes had been brought about in 40 major hospitals across the country.

Similarly, now, in just one minute, it had become possible to generate as many as 15,000 railway tickets, he said.

Saving energy

Modi added that saving energy was a focus of his government and pledged to distribute 77 crore electricity efficient LED lights in the country. The Prime Minister said renewable sources were his government’s focus, notably solar and wind.

"These 70 crore LED bulbs can save 20,000 MW of electricity worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore."

"I do not want to ask where all that money used to go (during the previous governments). I am happy to inform you that we have distributed 13 crore such bulbs."

He added that LED bulbs, which were sold for as high as Rs 350 each, are now being distributed by his government for Rs 50 each now.

"I urge you all to use LED bulbs, save energy and take part in helping our nation," Modi said.

Electrifying villages

Modi said when he took power in 2014, more than 18,000 villages in India did not have electricity.

"When we came to power, we decided they must get electricity within a thousand days. Not even half the time has passed and 10,000 villages have got already electricity," he said.

To reach electricity to the remote corners of the country, 50,000 km of transmission lines were being erected now as opposed to 30,000-35,000 km earlier.

"Electricity has already reached 10,000 villages out of the 18,000 unelectrified villages.

"After 60 years of freedom, only 14 crore LPG (cooking gas) connections were added. But we have added more than 4 crore new connections in just 60 weeks."

Modi backs new CPI target

Modi gave his backing to a new inflation target, saying his government had brought down consumer price growth from double digits under the last government.

Delivering his third Independence Day address, Modi backed the 4% inflation target, within a range of 2 percentage points either way, that had been agreed with outgoing Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan.

The government formally "notified" the medium-term inflation target just before Rajan held his final policy meeting on August 9. Figures last Friday showed inflation nudging over 6%, outside the target range.

PM lashes out at Pak for glorifying terrorists

Lashing out at Pakistan for glorifying terrorists, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today declared that the country will not bow before terrorism even as he said people of Baluchistan and PoK have thanked him for raising issue of atrocities against them.

Modi made no reference to the situation in Kashmir valley which has been rocked by violence after the killing of Hizbul Commander Burhan Wani, but accused Pakistan of glorifying terrorists and celebrating killings in India. This was an obvious reference to Wani who has been hailed as a martyr by Pakistan, which was not directly named by him.

Attired in his trademark half sleeves kurta and sporting a Rajasthani turban, Modi devoted bulk of his address on the occasion of the 70th Independence Day to presenting in effect a report card of his government's work particularly in boosting economic growth, ease of doing business and welfare schemes for the poor and farmers.

The Prime Minister, who has spoken out against atrocities on dalits in the recent days, said a strong country cannot be built without a strong society which is based on social justice.

He asserted that a "tough and sensitive" approach is required to tackle the age-old social evils including castism or untouchability.

Referring to terrorism, he asked the youth of the country to shun the path of violence and join the mainstream, saying they have not achieved anything by taking the path of terror and extremism.

You stated "commenting derogatory words against PM of OUR OWN COUNTRY"

Please list where PM has been tied with FEKU in above comment. Yes, the word FEKU has become common now in last 28 months, it is not specific to any person. It is the system that is in place with double standard and U turns on Bashans, spoken words or policies in many instances.

Read few times above comment, so that it makes sense to you or request for further clarification.

Few of the comments here is to justify it..
since independence we are used and committed for backward growth and isolated ...so we are...

    Mr. Shetty,

'we are happy live as slave..'

You are quite right at that ! MMS, an able bureaucrat, acclaim economist was just a slave for your stooges !

All schemes/policies of UPA were sour-grapes while you were in the opposition but soon the table turns, they all are so sweet !

The RBI governor appointed by UPA is not fully Indian !

A woman who came as Daughter-in-law of them PM is a foreigner to you even after being a widow and remaining in the country to raise her children as Indians !

Oh Yes ! We Indians are indeed slaves not to understand essence in any of this. But to expect a feigning bachelor, to believe in all his 'I can' or 'brave 56" chest' it really make one a patriot, a true Indian !

    A height of a paradox !

Yes… I should appreciate your concern and overview ..

Unfortunately with all these years still we are so called underdeveloped nation or developed nation..Thanx for the contribution of policies and rule of one family and the beneficiaries ..
Certainly, Manmohan Singh was able economist but he was puppet under family rule and so called widow is not living in India being patriot or mother to take care of her children. Its the swindled billions that bringing patriotism. Why they are given up their Italian citizenship ???
This govt is determined to change the way we live and appreciate the policies and decision the govt is taking on certain sectors which will take years to get down the roots. Everyone would accept it but just due to negative attitude don’t want to accept it.
Now 56” man dare to counter those , so all get along to call foul .. when elephant move in street all dogs barks in distance not to dare to get in way..…

    All sounds good in speech.
sometimes i think congress did good though they were slow then Modi Govt. Dr. MMS brought FDI culture, Aadaar Unique identification, other schemes. i think GST was also started by last govt. It sounds like old wine in new bottle (very good marketing) .
To some extent congress was firm with Pakistan to bring the culprit to justice.
I only heard about swacch bharat (which is very good idea) & Guv rakshaks (which is grown out of control) and Ms. Swaraj helping needy as MoE minister.

Hemanth, the largest church in GCC countries is coming up in Bahrain. The land has been donated by HH King Hamad. There are temples and Gurudwaras in Bahrain. Even though it is an Islamic country, Pork and alcohol is available for people who wish to eat and drink. Don't compare all Muslim countries to Pakistan. Our Cow protectors have much to learn from Muslim countries. God bless these countries with more prosperity. The word meaning of surajya (good governance) ... the meaning is “to bring changes in the life of the common man,". They kept on changing the word meaning.
The government is good in giving numbers for every work (that was started by UPA)that done in last few years.
Every single speech he talk about figures. Pakka Gujarathi Maths in every work that he plan. But nothing implemented. Where are the toilets that he announced in USA, Australia and UAE visits.
Linking Aadhar is the UPA idea why this man has to boast it and give figures now and then?.
Every opposition leader in UPA was talking on Dal,Petrol,Tomato prices and now they have only Maths.
