Mangaluru, Aug 16: 'Sur Surngaar', an evening of music and drama, was presented by 'Rang-Antrang' at Don Bosco hall on Monday August 15 in city.
'Rang-Antrang' is a theatre group that was formed last year to promote Konkani plays of quality.was formed last year to promote Konkani plays of quality.
'Umyam Umalle' musical concert
The show started with a musical concert of romantic songs titled 'Umyam Umalle' penned by Konkani's young Konkani poet and lyricist Wilson Kateel. The songs were selected from various audio albums and movie, tuned and sung originally by various musicians and singers.
'Ganv Mhojo' from the album by the same name, 'Kenna Kenna' from the album 'Thembe, Thembe', 'Tunch Tum' from the album by the same name, 'Geet Tum' from the movie 'Ek Aslyar Ek Na', 'Jeev Mhozo' and 'Dollyank Kajall' from the album 'Tem Yevnchea Vella', 'Thembe Thembe Pavsa' from the album 'Poilo Mog' were rendered by Prajoth D'Sa, Kevin Misquith, Shilpa Cutinho, Ashwin D’Costa, Royston Pinto, Senet D’Cunha and Ashvija Mendonca.
Sapna Saldanha compered the programme beautifully wherein she interacted with Wilson Kateel and the singers.
LED display during the singing enhanced the beauty of the show.
Apoline Monteiro honoured
Apoline Monteiro, the first lady actress of Konkani stage, who started her career in 1946, was honoured during the programme by Fr Paul Melwyn D'Souza, president of Konkani Natak Sabha.
Fr D'Souza appreciated the efforts of 'Rang-Antrang' team lead by Eddie Sequeira in staging the show. "When India is celebrating 70 years of Independence Day and Christians celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mother Mary, it is an apt way to honour Apoline Monteiro, who completed 70 years since her first appearance on Konkani stage," he said.
Fr D'Souza remembered the service rendered by Konkani Natak Sabha which through Don Bosco Hall has rendered 70 years of service to Konkani community.
Apoline Monteiro remembered the first two shows of the Konkani play 'Genevieve' which was staged in April 1946 at Milagres School grounds. The third stage has to be called off half way due to heavy rains she said. The then president of Konkani Natak Sabha, Fr Philip Neri was instrumental in recognising her talent and if it was not him, she would not have acted in the drama, she recalled.

'Varsak Ek Pavttim' short drama staged
Later, 'Varsak Ek Pavttim' Konkani play conceptualised by Eddie Sequeira and written both by Eddie Sequeira and Cha Fra Decosta was staged.
Initially staged in the year 1982, the play was a serious comedy and won the hearts of audience for its powerful dialogues, technicalities, light effects and acting. Denis Monteiro, Assumpta Pais, Eddie Sequeira and Leena Crasta acted superbly in their respective roles.
The complete show Sur-Surngar, music, drama, stage setting, lighting was creatively planned and directed by Eddie Sequeira. He had also videographed and edited all the video clippings shown on the background LED, all of that enhanced the total quality of the event and appreciated by almost houseful audience.
