Beltangady, Aug 18: Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police (SP), Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, visited Koraga families which have been living in terrible living conditions at Barhal Adi, Atrinje within Sulkery gram panchayat limits in the taluk on Wednesday August 17. He spoke to the Koragas living there, lent an ear to their problems, and instilled in them a sense of hope and reassurance.
It may be recalled that Daijiworld had come out with a story about the wretched living conditions of these Koraga families recently and pointed out to the fact that they have to cross the rivulet by using a wooden log which serves as bridge every time they go out or come back. At the meeting relating to grievances of scheduled castes and tribes held in the taluk headquarters on Wednesday, the plight of Koragas referred above too was raised and the SP immediately went to the spot and verified the details in person.
The SP, who braved torrential rain when crossing the makeshift bridge to reach the houses of Koragas, personally gathered information about their grievances. After learning that most of the families here do not have ration cards, houses, and other basic facilities, he promised to hold discussions with the deputy commissioner of the district and zilla panchayat executive officer towards providing these families shelter and other facilities.
Noting that a boy from one of these families has not been attending school because of the danger posed by the rivulet during rainy season, he told the family that the boy would be accommodated in a hostel. When Koraga families pointed out that there is government land in the area and requested to allot the same to them to build houses, he said he will speak to the deputy commissioner. He infused courage and confidence in their minds by telling them not to be apprehensive, and kindled hope among them by expressing the hope that the deputy commissioner will favourably respond to their plight.
