Mangaluru, Aug 20: The district Congress remembered former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi along with former chief minister Devraj Urs on their birth anniversary at the district Congress office on Saturday, August 20.
The leaders who offered floral tribute to the portraits of the two great leaders included state forest and ecology minister and the Dakshina Kannada in charge minister Ramanatha Rai, chief whip of Karnataka Legislative council Ivan D'souza, former city mayor Shashidhar Hegde, district Congress interim president Ibrahim Kodijal and others.
Welcoming all to the programme, Ibrahim Kodijal said "When the world was marching towards the revolution in information technology, Rajiv Gandhi made sure that the country did not lag behind. He was responsible for all the developments in mobile and computer technology. Devraj Urs on the other hand made sure that social and economic justice was done to all in the state. All of us must remember both the great leaders today."
Rendering his presidential address minister Ramanatha Rai said "Losing Rajiv Gandhi is a great loss for the country. The revolution in information technology in the country was started by him. He also brought constitutional amendment so that women and people of all sectors of the society could become the panchayat members. As the president of the SAARC, he also emerged as a world leader. Devraj Urs as a chief minister made sure that all the people in the society were equal. If many of the weaker sections of the society have a home to live now, then it is because of Urs."
