No water and refreshments, I could have died at Rio: OP Jaisha

New Delhi, Aug 22 (PTI): "I could have died there", said a distraught O P Jaisha as she recalled the women's marathon event at Rio Olympics during which she claimed she was not provided any water and energy drinks by the officials despite designated stations were given for India.

"It was very hot there. The competition was at 9am, I ran in scorching heat. There was no water for us, neither recovery drinks nor food. Only once in 8kms did we get water (from the Rio organisers) which did not help at all. All the countries had their stalls at every 2kms but our country's stall was empty," said Jaisha who finished 89th in Rio Olympics women's marathon event with a below-par timing of 2:47:19.

Jaisha had collapsed at the finish line after completing the marathon and had to be rushed to a hospital where her coach Nikolai Snesarev got into an altercation with one of the doctors and ended up being detained for half a day by the local police.

"We are supposed to be given drinks by our technical officials, it's the rule. We cannot take water from any other team. I saw the Indian board there but there was nothing. I had a lot of problem, I fainted after the race. I was administered glucose, I thought I would die," she recalled.

"My coach was very angry and he ended up arguing with the doctors. The coach thought I was dead. He pushed the doctor to enter my room because he knew he would be held responsible if anything happened to me," she added trying to clear the air on Snesarev's actions.

The runner claimed that she got no response from officials when she asked why water was not provided to her at the stalls.

"I asked officials why there was no water for us but I got no response. I don't know what they were doing. There were lot of people in the Indian athletics contingent, anybody could have done this job," Jaisha told 'Times Now'.

"I don't know where they were. I was in very bad shape. My coach was blamed for misbehaving with doctor but he was told Jaisha has almost died, what could he have done?" she asked.

AFI, on its part, said that Indian officials in Rio were not told by the athletes or their coaches about any specific requirement of any drinks.

"It is the responsibility of the organisers to provide water and energy drinks. For that there are water and energy stations throughout the course. We could have provided water and energy drinks to our athletes but neither they nor their coaches did not inform us that they would need water and energy drinks separately," AFI Secretary C K Valson, who was also in Rio during the competitions, told PTI.

When asked about the incident, Sports Minsiter Vijay Goel said it was the Athletics Federation of India's (AFI) responsibility.

"Every time any small incident happens, we take note. It was AFI's job, it is the federation which should have taken care of this," he said.

The athlete on her part said she has no clue who to hold responsible for the fiasco. "I don't know who to blame for this. May be nobody realises the seriousness of a marathon, the fact that we have to run 42kms," she said.

Valson also said that 3000m steeplechase runner Sudha Singh had collected medicines from the Games Village polyclinic just a day before her departure from Rio.

"Jaisha was treated at the Games Village polyclinic after she fainted at the finish line of marathon race. Sudha Singh also complained just a day before her departure from Rio that she was not feeling well and she also collected medicines from the polyclinic," Valson said.

"But all these are minor illness and we have not been informed of any major or serious illness. Otherwise, how would have they returned home after a long journey without any problem," said Valson, who reached the country early today.

@D.Shetty: Why you have to blame UPA and why not acche din. Read this copied from BBC. India finished with just two medals at the Rio Games, fewer than the six medals it won during their best-ever performance in London four years ago. (I am sure it is during UPA's time)but read more if you did not knew it: Five embarrassing moments for India in Rio: Indian boxers were threatened with disqualification after they turned up in shirts which didn't have India's logo - a key requirement at the Games.Sports Minister Vijay Goel was reportedly warned after some of his staff behaved rudely and tried to enter the venues without proper accreditation(not UPA minister mate). The minister received further criticism when he wished luck to Indian sprinter Srabani Nanda, but ended up posting the picture of another athlete, Dutee Chand, with his tweet(again one of your favourite minister). The appointment of a radiologist as the chief medical officer of the Indian team in Rio also received criticism. Authorities, however, said that the radiologist, the son of a senior sports official, "knew sports medicine well" (is he related to Daku or Feku or at least a Gujju)Some hockey players complained that they were invited to an official function to celebrate India's Independence Day, but "were only given peanuts to eat instead of proper dinner".

The Indian authorities are irresponsible. They have to make sure that Indian athletes are given enough hydration during the events BUT sorry Jaisha, I am not ready to buy your word that we cant take water from other counters. We have seen so much humanity during Olympics like athletes even stop to help the fellow athletes who fell. I don't think anyone would have refused to give you water, if you ASKED for. You don't need to go to that stage, i would have died. Water (and COW)is less expensive than human life in the entire world...

AFI should be held responsible. Even coach should have administered all athletes requirement. Indian politicians wake up late and now they award winners with huge sums for political propaganda (nearly rs 8 to 10 crores from tax payers money) so that athletes do not have to bother to get more medals in the future. Why we require so many supporters and politicians to accompany these athletes spending so much money. Our soldiers are dieing and the government ,the people are least bothered about their family welfare.

This is one of the problems we are facing due to UPA bagya..all reservations systems is the root cause of our appointing and governing system..officials with little knowledge or no knowledge or passion of sports are appointed for positions to govern sports arena , from training, ion to organizing and even infrastructure..All these years we failed to achieving any good results and only few athletes by their own will and determination got the glory to our country ..
Sports ministers and many of the official visit in Rio was useless its just a tour for them and waste of public money which instead could have put in good use for training athletes..
All know about the Kalmadi corruption and the the apathy of sports city and the law is so weak all enjoy the corrupt money..
So this year as usual our poor performance in Olympic Modi govt is blamed..this is how intellectual we are..no one is bothered to know its almost 70 years and many things could have changed then if our political family was really interested on improvement.
Modi Govt has started some initiatives and to get it right from root it will take years and hope we all support the cause..

I was watching how they train their athletes in China and America etc. They take small children aged 3 years and start training by professionals on Government funds. After some years they will check whether they are fit to represent their country than only they will give them full training, food, accommodation and financial help. But in India if those funds are there or any sports authority is there than the first claim goes tom our politicians and ministers. They will take whatever they want and they will keep trainers as per their interest than athletes will get minimum. How our second populated country will come forward in sports.

These allegations needs to be probed further. An accompanying contingent outweighing the number of performing athletes and all these paraphernalia going out for shopping and enjoying is the curse of Indian sports. The defense given by AFI is shaky and ridiculous. When the athlete is talking about water and drinks they are harping on personalized drinks. Frequent water supplement is essentially required in a full marathons and our officials have no patience to wait for two plus hours, a long duration by any standards. The nation needs to address the concerns of the athlete.

Are there separate counters for each country, and athletes are allowed to take and drink water only from their respective countries counter ? I watched Marathon Men's event on T.V. Runners from Kenya, Ethiopia and others picking water bottles from same counter !! So far in the history never heard such a complaint from any country. I hope all the athletes got nice food every day during their stay in Olympic village.
