Panaji, Aug 27 (IANS): The Goa government will conduct a comprehensive survey of the state's transgender population over the next three months, a senior official of the state Planning and Statistics Department said on Friday.
Joint Director Y. Durga Prasad said the survey will help map their exact population as well as enable the community to avail of "socio-economic entitlements" from the state as well as central government agencies.
Prasad said this at a state-level consultation for transgender organised by the Goa government's AIDS Control Society.
The one-day consultative programme in Panaji was attended by state government officials, lawyers, doctors and members of the transgender community.
According to the 2011 Census of India, Goa has 398 transgenders and the literacy rate among them is 73.90 per cent.
The population of transgenders in India is 4.88 lakh, according to the census.
